Looks nice, and I'm sure it will be great to use, but no 3G, and no really amazing technology?
But the design will sell for sure.

I don't see the big deal. It's no quantum leap in technology. It doesn't do anything that no other device can.

As usual it's just apple taking a known working idea, applying slick industrial and HI design to it and selling it at a very large premium. There's nothing wrong with that (it's a good business model... higher margins), but it's nothing special.

It's a good job Apple's amazing new gadget beats as it sweeps as it cleans - and allows you to leap over tall buildings with one bound. Because it's beginning to look somewhat Dead On Arrival as a competitive smartphone.
As several readers have pointed out, the lack of 3G makes the first iteration a hard sell in Europe and Asia. Particularly in Europe, where without many EDGE networks, it's using 2001 GPRS data.

100% agree with that ...... but those 'higher margins' are just going to get swallowed up in Legal bills....you have to admit Apple have a lot of balls in the legal department to square up to Cisco (who own the rights to 'IPhone')

I agree with the "nothing new" crowd. They're very good at doing that!

Want to see it being used - what an interface! Superb and just streets ahead of any dubious, complicated, so called competition:

Security shortcomings in the design of Apple's iPhone might make it easier to mount phishing and cross-site scripting attacks.
The iPhone's email client only displays the first few characters of a weblink, a factor researchers at Fortify Software warn makes it easier to hide a fraudulent URL at the end of a link without arousing suspicion.

The mechanism the iPhone uses to link between web browser and telephone functions also makes it easier to embed scam telephone numbers within sites, which a user may be prompted to dial.

3G iPhone is okay, I guess. But I have a serious problem with it. It's by Apple.
And apple are a self-confessed evil company.

OKay not EEEEVIL like genocide, but evil like...say...Microsoft....only worse.

iTunes: Total DRM lockdown.
iPhone: total lockdown.
OSX?: Total lockdown.

What happens if you breach the lockdown? Maximum Lawsuit.

What happens if you suggest something about a secret product (for example, the chap who said "I predict the iPhone will have a single button for power / standby"? Lawsuit.

So, much as I admire the brilliant implementation of the user interface, I will be sticking with this:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-devices/review/2007/08/10/HTC-P4550-Kaiser-Smartphone/p1

which, whilst being a little laggy in the interface dept, has a proper qwerty keyboard, and is actually more open, despite being Microsoft based.

It also has the added benefit of being able to emulate this:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-devices/review/2007/06/01/BlackBerry-Curve-8300/p1

though work insist that is a serious security risk. Idiots. So I have to carry both (Personal and Functional)

Apple make products that are a Domesticated Geeks wet dream. "I want all my geeky toys, and I don't want to understand anything about it: It must just work".

They apply a user interface that is elegant and logical (primarily by removing choice / flexibility: you do it apples way, or you don't do it. With MS you do it about 4 different ways, but never know which is best)

Then they charge an absoloutely staggering price for it, and for every subsequent upgrade, accessory or service they ever offer for it. And they ensure you buy them by making certain that their product will not work, or will only just work in low quality mode, with everyone elses product.

Well my iPod Touch is now running the Jailbreak modification and it's fantastic. I get a good music player with lots of useful apps and games!

Not knocking Jailbreak, Lee, but it's not "Apple Approved" IYSWIM?
Haven't you invalidated your warranty?

Beastlee
30-07-2008, 08:40 PM
Nope, unless it fails to the point it doesn't power up you cans imply put it into recovery mode and restore your genuine iPod backup. Apple have no way of finding it.
The Apple shop will replace it immediately if they can't get it started so they wouldn't see the jailbreak until too late.

ive had the 16g 3g now for the week and its all very well being 3g etc ...when you can find a decent signal
as a phone tho its crap , i fully agree with what you guys said about i apple bein DRM control freaks to the point its almost sinister
am thinking of doin an insurance job on my sony ericsoon and maybe i dunno taking that every where with me or swapping the sim over as the situation dictates wether i need a decent phone or decent ipod or mobile internet

thats my 2p ;)

O2 only Glenn. But they should have the activation part sorted soon so you can jailbreak it and put any 3G sim card in it.
