View Full Version : The vr4 has hit 500 bhp

Had a e-mail from thor-racing today.
The car has been maped up to 1.2bar of boost and is making 500 bhp at the flywheel and 423 at the wheels.
That is reaaly good power at 1.2 bar of boost.
But as always there is bad news
The link g2 ecu has a fault and keeps shuting down and when it does you loose powersterring and servo not good if you are giving it some.
Know the ecu needs to be sent of to link which are in new zeland.

Will know more when i speak to thor tomorrow.
A new year and still full of bad luck f##king car.

Still planing to run down the strip in april .

Thats looking nice 500@1.2 is a good . Well done for keeping going with it thru all your minor set backs .

Good luck and let us know when your going to the strip i'd love to see you run up and take the UK crown from Enigma/SGHOM (no offence guys but it's been static for a while )

Great news about the Power run Kev :2thumbsup

Sorry to about issues with ECU /Grrr

Hope you get it sorted soon

And a run down the Pod in April sounds good, as you don't need Power steering on there anyway :scholar:

Glad to hear you're making some forward progress, shame about the ECU. Nearly there tho!
Its good to hear some good things about the car, i know you've been down about it because of all the problems. Hopefully you're spirits feel a bit lifted after the dyno run?
Good luck and keep at it Kev!

Bugger about the ECU, but at least the fault is known!

So... where's the limit then? Is 1.2 bar the top, or are you going to push it with all those components and stuff? What boost/bhp target do you have?:inquisiti

Excellent news there Kev. 500bhp is a superb achievement. As has been said, shame about the ECU but at least you know what the problem is and hopefully you can get it sorted without too much trouble. Can't wait to see it used in anger on the strip ... that VR-4 was actually the first one I ever drove :scholar:

500bhp - nice... at the moment I can only dream of that.

Im a little sceptical about 2 bar though, isnt he running GTO turbo's the standard td-04-9b will only run about 17psi (1.2 bar) the uprated td-04-13t's run about 21psi which is (1.4 bar) so which turbo's is he running to be aiming for 2 bar.

What's installed on the car at the moment?

bradc

Richard, I am a bit surprised too, if they can reach 500hp at 1.2bar then 2.0 bar would be something in the 650hp range correct? And there is no way that any small TD04 (whether from a Lancer GSR, GTO, or WRX) can flow much above 250hp per turbo.

Axeboy
16-01-2007, 07:11 PM
I dont think it matters anyways.

2 bar may have been an old target, as it says, its mapped for 1.2 bar.

I would have to disagree with you on that one... Are we talking BHP or WHP?

550.94awhp @ 26psi w/544 Max Torque (http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=358188)

That would be around 630-650bhp - 315-330bhp per turbo for 2xTD04HL-19T
13Ts were proved to be capable of 475awhp that would translate to at least 550bhp. (was done at 20 psi on 3L engine with an aborted pull at 5500 rpm...) - 275bhp per turbo for 2xTD04L13T

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-278517.html even going by this its 390cfm*2/1.45=538bhp for stock WRX(13T) turbo setup = or almost 270 bhp per turbo... that sounds just about right.

PS: Want to get into turbos... ;) http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199534

19T's are big TD04's though, not small ones. I was mainly referring to the stock wrx items or similar. 275hp per td04l-13t isn't bad at all though.

Just another update on this, and Kev okayed me to post this when I saw him earlier.

There were other issues from the last attempt from Thor, that I'm sure he will go into more detail about when he has time......

Anyhow, more remapping was done at the weekend (not by Thor) and he currently has:

532 lb/ft torque
479 bhp at the fly
422 bhp at the wheels

......all at 1.5 bar......and the car is now running sweet and safe !

Oh, and I witnessed the graph.....but did not have my camera to take a pic.

The injectors are maxed out, so the next stage will be for injector upgrades, a second fuel pump, more mapping and 2bar boost and 600bhp should be possible :pimp2:

Hey Kevin, is your motor fully build or is it stock?

pitslayer
16-03-2009, 12:58 PM
its a full build with forged pistons etc I do believe, 500bhp on standard internals would be risky business, could do it, but I wouldnt suspect it would last long

Mr.Salas
18-03-2009, 05:19 AM
if a stock engine can hold that amount woulda be gr8 he he, but its all about the tuning i think

Turbo_Steve
18-03-2009, 01:28 PM
It's all in the tuning and how you drive it. I would imagine 500bhp atf is definitely into the riskier end of the standard internals, but if boost and ignition curves are smooth, and it doesn't get abused (i.e. plenty of throttle to spin the wheels rather than bog it and hurt the rods) then it could last for ages.

MPBVr4
18-03-2009, 01:53 PM

He shouldn't have a problem with the suspension !
I removed the suspension from my car 16 days ago and sent it to Kev, which he received 15 days ago! His MOT was 2 weeks ago tomorrow ! This was the reasonn i rushed the suspension to him, so he could get it on for his MOT..... My car is still up on bricks, as i am waiting for Kev to send me the suspension that he was taking off his car, and put it on mine !
I have tried to contact him on numerous occasions(3 calls today alone) but i am not getting any reply ? Not even to texts !

Welcome to the World of VR4 standard suspension /pan

I have given his Dad some rough measurements to check against Kevs VR4..

Approx 80mm F and 65mm R .. Thats the approx distance from the top of the tyre to the under edge of the wheel arch.. Or as a rough guide 4 fingers front and 3 fingers rear..
