Just a update on my in car pc project, Iv set up the pc in my house with my alpine 4 channel amp to two sets of 16.5cm speakers:

uploaded/2949/1168985470.jpg uploaded/2949/1168985939.jpg

Im planning to run it in the house for a few weeks before installing it in the car. So far no problems and it works GREAT, the sound is unbelievable. :2thumbsup The setup includes:

LinITX 8" touchscreen lcd
VIA EPIA M10000 Nehemiah Mainboard
1GB Ram
60GB hard disk
leadtek gps receiver
dvd slot loader
M2-ATX power supply
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

As for the audio itself I got the following:

Apline 4 Channel Amp MRV-F540
JL Audio VR650-CSI Front Components
Kicker R6C Mid Range Rear Speakers
Rockford Fosgate FNX2401X Rear Tweeters

For bass I also have the following (which I made a box for last weekend):

2 x Pioneer 12" Sub TS-W3004SPL Max 3.000w, Nominal 1.000 Watt 4ohm.
2 x Directed Mono Amplifier D2400 running at 2 ohm 800W RMS each.

To power all this I got two yellow top batteries, one in the front and one in the rear, all connected using a spilt charge kit so the alternator only charges one battery at any time.

Iv also taken the inside of the roof off in order to mount my flip down screen, im planning to cut the shape of the screen out of the roof card in order to have the screen flush when closed. Iv got pvc leather look material in black to cover the roof card with so that it will match my black leather seats, sumthing iv havent seen done yet and think will look good!

Oh yeah and the front 8" touchscreen and DVD slot loader will be mounted on my console iv made from a old console (Primered up and needs to be sprayed):

uploaded/2949/1168987470.jpg

The two holes at the bottom are for two small pc fans to pump air to the lcd monitor and i guess it will look kool.

finally as I was gonna have to spray that I decided to mod the gear surround and add a USB input on it:

OSiRiS your set up looks solid aswell mate. I see you went full out on the screens, I was thinking about having a few screens too but I ended up getting a 17" for fairly cheap.

forgot to say; im making my own custom install in the boot. I finished building my box for the subs last weekend and hopefully if it doesnt rain this weekend im looking to create mounts on the box to bolt it down the the car and also make a battery tray. The plan is to finish the install off with the pvc black leather look material, the same stuff im using for my roof.

Anyone see any problems with mounting the sub box to the rear shocks? I planning to make some metal mounts which bolt on to one of the three nuts which bolt the shocks down on each side.

Nah - bolt it between both and get a strut brace into the bargain!!

yeah that was the idea mate.. to bolt each side of the box to each shock and il probly bolt it to the floor of the boot

Just a update; This weekend me and my cousin hooked up the car PC with all the amps and subs for the first time. Hes building the same setup but for this IS200. As we only had space for setting up one ICPC, we did his, seeing it was his house. The bass from the subs was just unreal! It shook his room hard and most of the house aswell. I think it must of taken about 2mins of loud volume before the neighbours came knocking!! Some pics of the set up:

Yeah its looking and sounding really good. We added a EQ with built in line driver last night, which has made a fairly big difference, the bass is a lot cleaner and a lot louder:

Have you considered software yet?
I wrote my own system in Delphi with my old Vr4.

http://www.ivehcs.com/ivehcs/index.php

I put the project on hold when I was doing radio as none of the hardware out there for radio even approaches a reasonable standard yet. i.e. Their seek is rediculously slow, and the drivers are always broken.

If someone finds a radio card that seeks as fast as a normal car tuner, i'll reconsider.

n13l pm
28-01-2007, 01:33 AM
Nice easy to use software you have there mate. I was thinking of putting something simple together or finding something off the internet. I was going to think about that more once I get the whole car wired up and ready to install. Your software seems like what I will need, but i need sat nav in addition.

As for a radio card, have you consider a usb digital receiver (http://linitx.com/product_info.php?cPath=79&products_id=1099)? im not sure if its any good in a car but i know they do work quite well on a laptop or in house computer. You will notice they come with a antenna as well.

matsondawson
28-01-2007, 03:23 AM
Well mp3.com is the place to be fore software then.

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=60

I actually hated all the current systems out there, which is why I wrote my own. The all had terrible user interfaces, and no end of compatability problems. Also I only wrote my system for my use, which is why it only plays video and music off the hdd/cd/flash and doesn't do dvd, cd, or gps. Basically all the buttons are positioned so you don't have to look at the unit to do things like pause and volume.

I have a couple of other friends using it also who want me to expand it and sell it as custom software to thier customers. But truthfully there is a hell of a lot of effort in developing it and I don't have my beautiful vr4 anymore so it doesn't really benefit me.

Not to mention I live in smelly old nz where we don't need gps, don't have digital radio, and incar systems such as this are illegal. Only OEM units are allowed.

n13l pm
28-01-2007, 06:12 PM
Oh right I didnt know it was illegal for such aftermarket systems!! Thats unbelievable!!

very nice stuffs! I was also planning to implement car pc setup (I already got amps which accepts optical/coaxial digital input) but ended up just with all-in-one HU. All because lack of moulding dashboard skills, and quite hard to find the screens and psu in my area (most online stores blacklisted my country and if not, I'm afraid the package will somehow lost)

I heard from mp3car forums, using analog connection from car pc soundcard will have higher risk on alternator whine/noise on to the audio system.

Yep saw the car on saturday in its ICE morphin' stage and boy does it sound LOUD but nice and clear. The car looks like its destined for orbit with all that silver sound deadening material inside too.

The weight of the install is even enough to show up on the rear of the B12 suspension with no passengers! :speechles

This will be one special 8G when its done. /yes

Yeh, the vr4 console is just perfect for a touch screen, all fits great.
Only problem is it can be blinding at night.

In the end though, I feel even though a touch screen is good, you really need some buttons for that tactile feedback.

On another note since I can't seem to edit my old post, so my software has moved here.

what you need is a program that adjusts the brightness depending on the time , i think i have seen one somewhere will try and dig it out

looking good though , I'm looking at the infill g4 unit and considering going for that as it's an all in one unit

Hmmm  .. I am guessing you mean the seats :inquisiti

The install is looking very smart indeed.. liking that screen.. So doesn't adjusting contrast and brightness of the screen help at night?

You must have miles o cabling in there :speechles

When does the 17inch screen go in?

When do you hope to get it finished by?

Cheers

Yeah I meant the leather seats!! Its like a damn oven in there some times.

Theres not much left now, I only got the 17" lcd to mount and to line my boot up with leather for the finish effect. Everything else is done mate. In fact the whole system is done really but just need to do the finishings and software side of things. I think it will take no more then 4 weekends, tops. Im off on business for the next weekend and the last weekend of june, otherwise this would been finished end of the month. il keep up updated.

ha hey ive done this in my legnum - ur gonna find the touch screen a little high, since ur hand rests on the gearstick. But I think its unavoidable. Like someone said - u need buttons ideally.

I mounted mine in the rear corner (wagon) right next to the amp in what used to be the mmcs box.

Check out the carPC guys using programmable force feedback rotary encoders - basically the ultimate solution, i think bmw or mercedes have them.

The touch screen isnt too bad if your running a software with big buttons, which im in the process of doing. but yeah in the ideal world you want controls where your hands rest.. I was thinking more along the lines of a PC RF remote control, as its RF I can control it from anywhere in and around the car > like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Griffin-AirClick-USB-Wireless-Remote-for-iTunes-PC-MAC_W0QQitemZ160134035518QQihZ006QQcategoryZ48680Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem) <

Yeah I think thats a bit too many controls. With small simple remote I can mount it some where near where the hand would rest..

I already have one of those ATi Remote Wonders and they are rather large. I love the whole ICPC idea and have always wanted to build one. I have an old Ideq(onboard NVIDIA graphics and Socket A) here that I plan on doing something with but I need to make sure I get the right PSU for it.

If your thinking about it I must say its quite a easy job but very very time consuming, but having said that the result at the end will be awesome. As for the PSU I used a M2-ATX, a power supply made for in car pc's. Theres also a M1-ATX but the M2 was a bigger and better model. I used www.mp3car.com for ideas and reviews. In the UK theres only a few places other than ebay to get any parts from, I used linitx.com and thers also itx-warehouse.co.uk.

Let me know if you do plan on starting on a icpc project.
