I concur... unless you want the facelift version launched in Aug. 99...

My avatar shows a facelift version. Pre-facelifts had square foglamps, and some other detail changes. Cheapest facelift I've seen was around 4K, but this was a bit of a woof woof to be fair..

This reminds me - I really must get round to writing that guide on How to spot a UK galant from quite a long way away...

He just chose to let you live - GLS power is not to be used lightly! INSERT INTO post VALUES (because there's not much of it:D)

Anyway, I bet you were in a petrol station before him :p

What should I look for mechanical wise apart from the obvious when looking at the galant.

There is one on ebay going from £1500. See Ebay Galant (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2443866925&category=18230) but it is an auto! Thus slow INSERT INTO post VALUES (doh!)

UK galants....

Watch for:

Worn front lower balljoints/bushes INSERT INTO post VALUES (especially on higher mileage cars)

Steering arms/track rod ends are a little weak and can often wear at an accelerated rate if the car's been kerbed... Mine suffered this with it's previous owner, but not a major drama to fix.

Cambelt change at 54K is vital - don't leave it longer.

The 4G63 is tough, but can suffer with lash adjuster problems. These make the engine sound tappy/knocky. Not life threatening initially, but should be sorted sooner rather than later. If the unit taps slightly when first started, that's ok, but longer than 30 secs points to worn/blocked lash adjusters. Sometimes, repeated oil changes/flushes will unblock the buggers.

Bald tyre shoulders INSERT INTO post VALUES (especially on the rears) doesn't always mean abuse...the suspension geometry may need a reset INSERT INTO post VALUES (the GLS suspension seems to be easily knocked out of kilter?!).

The GLS attracted fleet managers with it's low-in-class whole life costs, so 3 year old cars with interstellar mileages are fairly common. This isn't a problem provided servicing has been done correctly. Watch for re-sprayed panels though. My car started life in this way!

The UK-spec 4 speed auto does not suffer the transmission shudder design fault of the japanese-spec 5 speed box.

Pre-facelifts have NO tiptronic gate - standard P-R-N-D-3-2-1 layout only.

No doubt there's more that I've missed:D

If I think of any more things to look out for, I'll post them:D

zedy1

is yours a triptronic kieran?

Yes:)

There's a couple more Galants appeared on Ebay....

One's a V6. It's got a VERY low start price, because it's been in a minor scrape, looking at the blurb. It's also unusual in that it's a 1999 model with pre-facelift bumpers, but it's got a High-contrast dash fitted and a tiptronic box... What's going on there, then?

Still, it's cheap and may be worth going to see:

Another V6 here - looks nice to me!

A GLS here. Pre-facelift. Got non-standard wheels on it.

Let us know how you get on!:)

there's a reserve price in ebay, and this reserve price maybe around the market value. Or if it popular then it might get bid up to the value he wants anyway. Best to speak to the seller and see how much he/she wants. I saw a RX7 starts with 99p!

that cannot be a y reg? is it a import or what?

Great to see 2 2.5 V6's put on ebay today! But one thing is odd

have you noticed on the 2.0 litre GLS that you never see the front left of the car!

Even the last photo looks as if it has been croped with photo-shop This must be some problem there INSERT INTO post VALUES (crator sized dent? rust? who knows?)and the seller is not saying. This is why I did not bid! Plus it isn't taken at his/her house INSERT INTO post VALUES (it looks like some car park to me).

This is the main reason why ebay is a no no for buying cars without looking at it.

This is the car! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2444107871&category=18230)

I think you have paste the link for the blue 2.0 Galant, and it is a S 'reg'.

Looking at the number plate it doesn't seem to be an import.

As to the front left, you might want to contact the seller and ask for a picture, and ask whether you can have a look at the car before you bid. If he has nothing to hide then he should agree.

It would be unusual not to ask the seller questions when buying cars on ebay, as it is such a risky business. Personally I would not buy unseen cars from ebay because although the cost would be lower than the market value, but if something goes wrong then you cannot go back to the seller.

If you do choose to buy on ebay, make sure you ask for more pictures, and check its history etc.

I thought I found a bargian when I bought a brand new cordless mouse for a pound! Plus £2 p+p. I couldn’t believe my luck and I asked the seller whether he really wants to sell it for a pound? He replied ‘why not’. Ok so I send the money, but haven’t seen the stuff arriving. I chased up and he said because I didn’t pay for the insurance so there’s nothing he can do about it!

I am not saying he didn’t send the item at all, but this is the impression he gave me, right from the beginning. What a coincidence that Royal Mail also misplaced it!

I am sure there are a lot of genuine seller on ebay who try to make a living and try to sort things out when there are problems, but there are some w@nkers there who we have to watch out for, especially those with lots of negative feedbacks. They are the unhelpful ones when things don’t go right.

STILL AUTO TRADER HAS A FEW GOOD 2.0 LITRE cars for sale but they are mostly rep-wagons and I dont fancy the 4spd auto INSERT INTO post VALUES (pre '99) as they are slow as hell!

I was going to get this lancer Mivec INSERT INTO post VALUES (thus the name)http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=68004 but it is a bit expensive! So I shall stick with the galant

Looks very nice, but very expensive for a 7 year old 1.6l car INSERT INTO post VALUES (even in euros). I think you can get an old Evo for a similar price!

Another GLS has appeared on eBay.. £1.00 start, but there's a reserve. The picture shows a sticker price of £3695... Hope they don't expect to get that, because it's not worth it... But if the Auction's got a low reserve, it may be worth a shot.

If you view the car via their website, rather than the ebay ad, the following is revealed - I've edited it for the important bits:

Petrol Automatic green 78000 Miles Full Service History, Guaranteed finance, make us an offer, delivery in uk, valet, all major credit cards accepted

The Ebay advert is here - But I'd get it checked out... I think I've seen this car on eBay before.... That private plate it's wearing seems familiar...

If you are seriously interested then you should wait until the last moment at the cheapest price - surely you dont want to keep the ball rolling and put the price up.

IT WILL GO FOR AROUND £3000 which is a tad high soo I won't care if it goes. there is another for £1000 and a few on autotrader so lets wait and see for the power of the GLS

I bought my V6 here - and all my mitsubishis and other previous cars INSERT INTO post VALUES (all 50 of them ) in the last 16 years! highly recommended!

on the e-bay subject, I wouldnt buy a car off of here without seeing it in the flesh 1st - too many risks;
damaged / repaired
HPI
abused
someone elses crap?
but on the other hand i've aquired a towbar, radar detecter and other bits and bobs from e-bay with no hassles - but these have never been more than £100
