well the time has come for me to get broadband,

which isp to go with?

i do plan to do some leeching. (mainly music)
5gig (ish) plan
NO gaming (over that) so ping isnt an issue

any recommendations?

Full speed?

Orcon and Slingshot are the cheapest.

All suck because of telecom!

Orcon or ihug would be my pick. I wouldn't go with xtra on a matter of principle, and slingshot's support SUCKS!

yup... agree! i dont like the tolls bullish! with some of the companys like Orcon, Ihug etc i think its just stupid, an extra $10 if u dont have tolls with that ISP.

I like Worldxchange (www.xnet.co.nz) They have decent rates and dont charge you an extra $10per month if you dont have your tolls with them. Though I do, because they have good toll rates.

Good service, haven't had any problems with the ADSL and their rates are ok. I dont have any plan as such, I just pay 0.15c per MB on top of the base package (which determines speed)

what sort of speeds do you get with that?

the most iver ever got with xtra is 543kb/s that was a few months ago... now its an average of 120kb/s depends on the source of download. ive been a broadband user for 3 and a half years now... at the moment its at its worst! /Grrr

speed is all relative... how far you are away from the exchange for example is something that is a big factor.

I have a 3.5mb/s down stream plan though.

Are you able to get on the TelstraClear cable network? I suppose it depends where you are in Auckland.

Here in Christchurch on that, I get around 8Mb/s down (nominal is 10Mb/s and 1.8Mb/s (nominal is 2Mb/s) up. That's about 1MB/s, though the best I've actually seen is around 900KB/S. Puts ADSL in the shade. I can blitz the 80GB/month allowance in 36 hours with good torrents. Over-use charges are $1.50/GB. Plus, you get digital TV and phone on the same connection. Tell Telecom to go away!

If you can't get cable, I understand it's best to avoid Xtra as it's dog-slow.

I have xtra DSL and xnet at home.
Xnet are good, plus I'm on the legacy unlimited national traffic plan (good for leeching if you can ensure it's from NZ)

Also, I hope you put down Kenneths name for the referral, as that person gets $30 credit on their account.

I got Xtra Go Large, Unlimited cap, $49 per month, suits ok, speed seems ok now after some horrendous months late last year when it was heel dragging.
Just easier than trying to go through some third party ISP which still has to go through Telecon anyway.
And Orcon had a big power outage last week, 4 -7 hours and their deisel backup didn't . . .
Speed can be misleading, it depends a lot on the server at the other end and how big/busy it is.
