:afro:

Just come back in from checking it in the car, just to make sure its not resting on dash, or against window, allowing enough room for the fibreglass coating. :scholar:

Its quite hard to see on the photo(to many mad colours :inquisiti ), but im currently smoothing it out ready for its coating.

Be careful them gauges don't get in the way of your vision Barry, especially at them roundabouts/intersections!

5 quid a tub :afro: from "The Works" its 8 quid at Toys are us /Grrr

Anyways,

Version 1 has been scrapped... it turned out a bit naff, and i used the wrong glass fibre i recon...

so.. onto version 2...

Got some fibreglass paste, and some filler as a second layer (easier for sanding)

Firstly a pic of the binned verson 1, followed by pics of version 2.

The second pic is from my eyeline showing how much of my view is obscured.

8 Hours later... - the fibre paste has been filed and sanded down...

second coat of filler has been applied, and for the most part is ready to roll. im getting a Dremel of a mate tommorrow so that i can finish off the front, hence the roughness atm. I realised i put to much paste on the inside of the furthest right pod hole, and because its in an akward place i cant really get at it with a file or sand paper.

So tomorrow i should have the front completed, then remove the plactecine and ensure the holes are big enough, at right angle for the gauges (theres quite a bit of filler on the front to allow me to file of more to sort out the angles.) then off to b&Q to match up the paint of the pillars, and im done, i hope.

i used normal carpaint.
a good primer then the carpaint 2 or 3 times and then a gloss 2 times.

Coolio, thanks.

Currently im thinking a Scourer (http://www.arix.it/webadmin/include/imgviewer.asp?ID=568) wil do the job to recreate the effect... but if that dont work ill be trying different things to find as closer match as possible..

k, im pretty much done now....

Im still not 100% its gonna be ok... but i suppose ill not know untill its in the car, with all the dials in.... at that point ill make a descision whether to keep it, or bin it.

anyways, some pics, there are still a few minor dints that need addressing, but ill use poly filler for that :)

This is the top, the bit you will see through the window, hence it being as smooth as a babys bottom.
15452

The bottom side, the bit facing dash... not really bothered about quality there.
15453

Top view, which looking at it now shows one of the facia areas being a bit wonky
15454

The one with the gauge in will allow for large gauge, which was the whole idea..
15455

And the other two holes populated.
15456

15457

As you can see theres still a wee bit of sanding to do to make the circles more.. erm.. circular  but overall im pretty chuffed with it...

il put it in the car tomorrow before i spend ANY more time on it and decide whether im gonna keep it or not.

additionally, i may also see what it will look like with large gauges... so that there isnt as much of a erm.. border for want of a better word.

BraindG
30-01-2007, 01:56 AM
lol couldnt wait!

ill take some pics in the day light tomorrow... but looking at it in the car, it looks way better... but, im still not 100% satisfied.

It will look good when its finished, don't worry.

looks, great and better than many of the pillar pod mounts ones, especially for a diy job, Re the paint finish, you can buy aerosols of textured fleck stone spray,

http://www.plasti-kote.com/plastikote/homefash/template.jsp?searchcode=FLE&product=Fleckstone&t=1

if the colour doesn't match up close enough, refinish with interior car paint

The jobs kinda on hold atm, i need to buy gauges so i can complete it, round the edges off around the gauge faces etc....

once i have them ill continue again. :scholar:
