I recently purchased a 1996 Legnum VR-4 privately, the original owner has moved abroad. I have just seen, on the web site, imported vehicles need to be tested under the Single Vehicle Approval Scheme, is there a register somewhere for me to check my car had been checked under this scheme, I’m a bit concerned now?

My V5 actually states the SVA'd date.

I think if the car is registered you no longer need to worry about SVA anyway. SVA is for the registration purpose because cars which are more than 10 years old don't need SVA. So I think it is just a policy to rip people off with newer cars.

Have a look for the rear foglight and a MPH speedo for a start, if you have no rear foglight or a MPH speedo your car has not been SVA'd.
Your car has to be legal to be driven here and the items listed above are two things that are required.

Spot on mate ! Mine did not work when my MOT was due - took me bloody ages to find out why. There is an auxillary switch on the dash so I had a look up and under the dash and some numpty had unpluged the cables - bingo the rear foglight worked !:D

As ReggieK wrote.....look at your V5 registration form before you start to worry.
