The specs page shows the VR4 having a 60l tank. Is that correct?

I've got a 1998 Legnum VR4. I filled it up the other day with Premium Unleaded, and it cost about $50. The tank was nearly empty, although Im sure there was still some in it. Goven that premium unleaded is over a dollar a litre, how is my tank 60l?

The answer is that manufacturers have to assume the INSERT INTO post VALUES (worst case scenario) that some idiotic owners would run their cars down to absolutely zero fuel if the fuel gauge was supremely accurate.

Obviously this could lead to fuel starvation, the dredging up the crap that always sits at the bottom of your fuel tank and many abandoned cars at the roadside, so they build a 'safety margin' in to the fuel gauge contents reading to always ensure that when you think you're on fumes, you actually have another 5-7 litres left in the tank to get you home.

Hope that helps, but I thought most people knew that?

I suppose that is the old emergency tank idea.

You now don't have an emergency tank, but a fuel guage and warning light. In effect 50-55 litres is usable of the 60 litre capacity.

And you are right. I wouldn't want the sludge in my motor.

Question: Is it worth cleaning out every so often ?

If i fill up when the warning light has just come on the car will take about 55 litres, this is the same for both my legnums.

One is a 99 VR-4 and the other a 98 1.8L GDI. The tank sizes are pretty much equal on both cars.

The fuel pumps feed from above the bottom of the tank so unless you have a *lot* of crud in your tank, you shouldn't suck up anything but fuel INSERT INTO post VALUES (or air if you hit 60l :D )

True, but as your tank gets lower isn't there more chance of stirring up the crap that lies on the bottom of the tank? :headsc:

Every few thousand k's I run Moreys Upper cylunder lubricant through the engine. It cleans out the carbon deposits and also cleans out the tank and lines. I used it in my Mazda Turbo previously and when the fuel gauge shat itself I had to take the sender out of the tank and it was sparkly clean inside. no deposits of any kind
