"On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had ... all ยป a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets."

It's a Google video of C'était un Rendez-vous, the eight minute film shot by Claude LeLouch driving through Paris at five in the morning on his way to meeting a lassie.

However, recent detective work has spoiled a bit of the romance. It was originally claimed he was driving a Ferrari 275GTB at speeds of up to 240km/h. Truth is he was using a Mercedes automatic (450SEL?), and never reached higher than about 160km/h. The soundtrack was just overdubbed to make it seem more spectacular.

Still a good watch, and there's now a website that lets you track the route as you watch using Google Maps. Modern technology, eh?

Well, the overdubbing must have been damn good, because it seems fairly well synchronised, including a few wrong gears. Sounds like some V12 music. Certainly not a V8 as in the 450. I wonder if I took the mufflers off my V12 it would sound like that? I recognised a number of locations from when I visited Paris for a couple of weeks in 2001. Cool stuff!
