If anyone is experiencing very slow connection
Pipex has a problem
And this will effect other ISP's including NTL
My Broadband last night was struggling to open pages for a while but speeded up eventually
Don't know if anyone is still having preblems
But thought you might want to know :D

The failure of a major backbone link between the UK and USA caused difficulties for Internet traffic across many ISPs.

A more minor routing problem within the PIPEX network also affected some PIPEX users for a short time during the afternoon.
Symptoms: The backbone link failure affected several ISPs, including PIPEX, causing traffic to be slow or intermittent, particularly to US-based servers. Additionally, as a consequence of this problem and the associated traffic rerouting DNS servers were at times unreachable, or unable to contact master servers to obtain information, leading to unreliable name lookup.

The PIPEX routing problem caused ADSL connection traffic to be intermittent/slow and some servers were briefly not reachable. This issue originally affected @xtreme2 and @xtreme ADSL users, with @xtreme2 users being affected for a longer period.
Actions: Backbone traffic was rerouted and rebalanced last night and service began improving in the early evening, returning to near normal by about 7.30pm.

The routing issues within the PIPEX network were resolved before 5pm, with server connectivity being restored first, followed by @xtreme.pipex.net ADSL customers and finally @xtreme2.pipex.net customers.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these problems.

And there more

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/34204.html

A damaged undersea transatlantic cable is being blamed for causing havoc for Net and phone users in the UK last night.

A number of ISPs are understood to have been hit by the problem, which surfaced INSERT INTO post VALUES (the problem, not the cable) yesterday afternoon at around 4pm.

The cable - which is owned by a consortium of telcos - is believed to have hit a snag INSERT INTO post VALUES (figuratively speaking, of course) somewhere off the French coast. France Telecom, which is responsible for that section of cable, is sending a boat out to examine the damage.

At this stage it's not known exactly what the damage is or what caused it. However, the effects of the incident were felt in the UK last night.

BT has confirmed that some of its voice services were hit by the outage, while NTL blamed the cable problem for downing its Net service - including web browsing, email, ftp and newsgroups - for around eight hours.

The service was back up and running by around 1am today, although the cableco has conceded that some punters may still be suffering problems this morning.

Telewest confirmed that its customers also experienced difficulties accessing email and personal webspace for around four hours. Although it's still investigating the matter, a spokesman acknowledged that the problems could be a result of the damaged cable.

And Tiscali said it was unaffected by the incident, although some of its punters may have found accessing US-based sites slower than usual.

On NTL here - I can't see how a backbone failure / cable snag prevented it's DNS servers from resolving names.. If you knew the IPs of websites, you could connect no problem!

When I tried to ping NTL's servers, I think only the secondary would respond, and then only sometimes...

Or, are NTL's servers not in the UK? I would have thought so however...

Had this yeasterday too, I'm with NTL Broadband.
Switched on puter and tried to surf the net for dwarf throwing and midget porn like usual but it didn't work.. but my homepage worked and it was an updated version so it was getting through but nothing else was.
Thought it was my puter as I normally have Gremlins to stay inside my computer at times.
So I reset my ntl box 1billion times, even changed my goddamn network settings INSERT INTO post VALUES (I have a home network too) completely changed the whole bloody thing..
So I had to do what I really hate to do and that is USE DIALUP :Cry1: :Cry1: it worked though, so I managed to get my dwarf throwing and midget porn fix after all.
