View Full Version : Wheel bearing grief

My front and rear driver side bearings need replacing.

A garage has quoted 400 pounds all inclusive to take off the arms, press out the bearings themselves, and replace them with the 'Automotive' brand?

I'm just worried that its not going to be put back right again.

Is this an easy job to do if were to do this myself if I replace the whole hub assembly for both front and rears instead?

Personally I would do it myself, its quite an easy job tbh.
There are some guides on how to do this in the articles area, and recently I (theres a thread by me, stuartturbo somewhere) found that you can buy the entire hub from Koyo directly.

Wouldn't say it is a difficult job to do the whole hub, but does depend on level of experience working on cars, if you see what I mean! There is a guide on here somewhere which will give you an idea of what's required. Try the search, see what it unhides!!

The bearing can be a right Turd of a job they dont use std bearings.Are the garage aware of this?? As the outer case of the bearing is the wheel hub
Replaing the whole assemble is alot easier than just the bearings. bit more expensive but quicker.

I picked up a VR4 remanufactured hub/bearing from a certain White Legnum owner for very cheap (woddaboy!), and a new whole assembly (original EVO item) from fleabay for 70 quid. Both fronts done!

Not a big job to fit - a quick search will reveal a superbly written article that will equip an orangutang to do it ;)

I've done the front drivers side on mine, but not the rear.

It was about £180 for the whole hub assembly and is pretty straightforward to do.

Most of it is pretty easy. The hardest part is getting the hub nut off the driveshaft as its bloody tight. A long bar will shift it! The only other specialist tools required are a big torque wrench (it tightened mine up as much as i could, the drove to my local garage and asked if they could torque it up for me) and also a balljoint splitter.

Allow about 3 hours for the job. My hub had siezed into the hub carrier, so required lots of use of the swear box and hammers!

Torque wrench needs to be big 200Nm

Or try standing on the end of your rachet
( eg if you way 80kg 0.3m bar = 225Nm)
( eg if you way 120kg 0.2m bar = 235Nm)

did just the bearing ng tight with her moneyon a 93 vr4 coz the owner was being tight with her money...to do just the bearing cutting torch and grinder are required so yeah, just go with the hub assembley

Had the car checked out again by a local garage and they've now found the following:

Driver front wheel: Slight bearing noise, No play, makes the cabin grumble.

Driver rear wheel: Lots of bearing noise, No play, makes WO-Wo-Wo/scrape-scrape sounds in cabin.

Passenger rear wheel: NO bearing noise, some play, no sound in cabin

In summary...a confused mechanic?

Does the above sound familiar?

the plastic liner on the insisde of the gard is loose and hitting you tyre once its get some speed and air pushing on it

Aye, thats always a possibility - normally its passenger side

I have this noise and a grumbling in the cabin. Caused by hitting the kerb in the snow. I borrowed a set of alloys and the noise went away. I have bent 3 alloy wheels.

I bought a 2002 sport estate it also had the same noise and it was only 6 months old at the time. The 17" alloys were warped during manufacturing and were replaced under warranty by Lindhill Colchester.

I would put you spare on and see if the noise goes away or use a dial gauge to check the alloy wheels.
