Quite exciting news tonight, I was reading through a rather large w5m51 pdf when I found that it listed the gear ratios as:

2.982
1.95
1.407
1.031
0.72

while our gear ratios are:

3.333
2.105
1.407
1.031
0.761

Basially what this means is that the evo 4 had a longer 1st and 2nd gear, and a longer 5th gear. It did have a much shorted final drive ratio in order to really pack the gears all nice and close together, but that isn't as much of an issue for us with our nice big torquey engines.

All of this means I have to put another nice little chart together.

Also found out there is another gear ratio set available:

2.785
1.95
1.444
1.096
0.761

With this one first is even longer than in the first evo setup, and 3rd+4th are a little shorter, this set of ratios is out of the EVO RS, obviously they wanted the gears really close together for this one.

Also from this thread: http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread.php?t=125217&highlight=final+gear it sounds as if the evo and galant final drive gears are compatible with each other, even though I'm not 100% sure if the galant they are talking about is a US 6G7x model, but it has the same 4.111 final drive as ours, so I would imagine any final drive gear for a W5M51 will work with our cars.

Which brings me onto the next point which is that these guys http://www.teamrip.com/NEW_EVO_STAGE_3_TRANSMISSION.html make a 3.73:1 final drive option, which is quite close to the 3.684 auto gearbox ratio we are familar with. I've emailed them asking them what options are available, as well as just why it is $1000 for a single gear???

Interesting, I wonder what the VR4 would feel like with the Evo gears. I quite like the torquey feel right now although 1st & 2nd are quite short.
So, do you think if I get a used Evo 4, 5 or 6 gear box that the 1st, 2nd & 5th gears would be interechangeable between gearboxes ?
Evo gearing should be great with upgraded turbos'

Hmmm..... $1000 dollars may be less if we can buy a handful at supply only. Probably not enough less though!!

Edmund, I'm 100% positive it will be possible to change the gears out. The one thing I don't know is if it is possible just to swap individual gears off (ie I would want 1st, 2nd, 5th) while other people might only want 1st and 2nd. I don't know if we would need to take the entire shaft with all 5 gears + reverse on it, or if it is possible to really mix and match, and have:

2.785 (evo rs)
1.95 (evo rs or gsr)
1.407 (ours or evo gsr)
1.031 (ours or evo gsr)
0.72 (evo gsr)

The good news is that ralliart are just next door to me at work and last week I was talking with them about final drive gears, and the guy showed me a few gear assemblies with all 5 gears on them, and they were just sitting in a box.

Nick - would you be happy with the ratios of the evo box I put up in the first post? I think it would be a great compromise and if we can literally just grab an evo gear set then I'm sure it will be cheaper than a new final drive from teamrip.com

Thanks Brad, I'm due for a clutch change & a couple of my gears are grinding, so I will ask my mechanic to see if he thinks the gears are interchangeable individually or singly. I was going to change the gearbox as I have a low mileage VR4 gearbox but I would like the Evo gears... 1st, 2nd & 5th................

The Evo GSR gears are interesting. Not sure I am bothered about the RS 1st gear as well. So an evo GSR box with our final drive and bellhousing should do it. Maybe a good buy second hand?

So both of you are interested in:
2.982
1.95
1.407
1.031
0.72

I will talk to ralliart today and see if they have a few spare sets of gears. They are always pulling apart gearboxes and putting in $20000-$40000 gear sets in, so I'm sure they will have a few spare :)

I am interested in a GSR set if poss. not too worried about the first gear being GSR or RS

going to go to ralliart in about 30 minutes, hope I can nick off with a few sets of gears :D

been down to ralliart, they had a gear set with:

2.785
1.950
1.407
1.031
0.761

What we need is: (from this page)
http://www.lancer-evo.net/community/tech.php

evo 5/6 gsr (not much chance because it is fairly old now and wouldn't be converted to a rally set of $20000 gears) or evo 7 rs with brembos

those 3 cars had the 0.72 5th gear. The real bad news is that about 6 weeks ago they threw away about 10 gear sets, but they don't think any were from the cars we need the gears from.

Any gearbox from EVO 5,6,7 GSR model should be ok for me. I will check around locally.
Great research Brad.

spoken to another place here, they might have a 0.72 5th gear somewhere, I might pop down there on saturday and have a look myself. I also found out that the evo4-6 shape Lancer GSR that came with the 4g93t 1.8 engine came with a 0.666 final drive, but I don't know if it's w5m33 gearbox has compatible gears with our w5m51's

Just found out that a 0.72:1 5th gear will cost NZ$340 give or take $30, that is for the gears on the input shaft and the output shaft.

I'm hell keen :D
