right i personally havnt heard it so dont know about it. but my dads galant is buggered.....AGAIN!!!!
story i know, the car was taken out last night, for 6 mile run, on the way back....the gearbox started making a loud whining noise, kinda like a knackered bearing ive been told.... it goes when the clutch is dipped......right now before anyone jumps to answers this car has had
new clutch
new thrust release bearing
new gearbox bearings
new wheel bearings
so whats wrong with it? anyone got any ideas, all of these have been done since novemberish, so its all recent work, and it was done properly....
i know theres a few people with things like these "whats going to go wrong for so and so now etc" but we are seriously reconsidering these galants, lovely car dont get me wrong, but they just go wrong all the time. my dads has had 90% of the front end replaced which isnt cheap, mine needs the whole front end replaced as its just giong to fall off...... since last year they have cost us about 3k in repairs, and to be fair aswell, you cant really say its because there old, because ive had cars for less money, damn site older, that just didnt go wrong, or as wrong as these......just starting to pull my hair out with them

but anyone got any ideas on what it could be? apart from the sound ofthe car being crushed:thinking:

Have you checked the gearbox oil level ?

Sounds like the release bearing. Done properly or not, sounds like it's still a problem.

its not had any issues before driving wise, ok the clutch pedal has no life in it what so ever, but drove smooth....will have a look at it tomorow

blown all the gearbox oil

Thought that may have happened... bummer

I had a similar thing on a Sierra years ago (a leak that I was not aware of). After a long motorway journey with the noise getting progressively worse gearbox was knackered ... I hope this is not the case for you. :inquisiti

I guess an oil seal has gone somewhere ?

the gearbox was rebuilt in november, and the company who rebuilt skimped on 5 quids worth of seals, that werent even hard to replace, seriously your rebuilding a gearbox its in front of you, the seals are knackered, oh well put them back in.....its in the garage today, were giong to see if its savagable, if not, my dad is going to come down so hard on that gearbox place they wont even know what a gearstick is.....seriously it cost us like 400-500 quid to get that box rebuilt with new bearings and they didnt do 2 seals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the rebuild place did not put in place the seals then what else did they not do , bet they only change the simple easy to change bits rather than the hard bits .

Given that the gearbox has no dipstick there was no way of you knowing the level I would suggest you have a very good chance to get it fixed FOC by the garage/ refurb place as they have not executed there job with a care of duty .

Worse case is that you have to go via the small claims court

Sounds like the release bearing. Done properly or not, sounds like it's still a problem.

And as it seems has already happened, the other problem has the same symptoms. The input shaft bearing is also noisy when spinning in neutral (or in gear, but easy to hear in neutral) and will disappear when the clutch is released.

I hope the rebuild doesn't cost too much.

Did you get any kind of warranty? Usually you get like 12 months / 12000 miles on gearbox rebuilds ...

the guy we use to do our work, is fitting the new seals for free, and sorting it out.....however if the gearbox is knackered, then it will be going back there, and if they do not repair, it will be small claims court.
btw the guy that does our work didnt rebuild the box, the box was sent to a gearbox sp...hang on "specialist" who rebuilt it, so if anyone is going to get there gearbox rebuilt, i wouldnt recomend it going anywhere near, a company around the ,
Springvale industrial estate area,
Cwmbran
Torfaen
S.wales

and like said, which i just thought off, if they didnt do 2 easy seals, what else didnt they do

I have sympathy, my car was in The Garage, Wishaw for replacement belts, waterpump, diff and AYC fluids, they accidentally drained the gearbox so changed that which I didn't really mind, better done than not.

Next day on the way to stranraer ferry after steady driving in the average speed catchment zone there was a bad knocking noise, fortunatelly I have a mate with a garage in Girvan who got it on the ramp straight away, could find no problem with lose bits.

Turned out the gearbox oil was at the bottom of the dip stick, 1.5 litres and off we went, made the ferry but the gearbox is now sluggish changing from 2nd to 3rd which is a bad sign.
