As you can see they are 100% brand new and are in very very good condition. These gears are the long first and long second setup, with our stock ratios in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

They are:

2.785
1.950
1.407
1.031
0.761

Compared to:

3.333
2.105
1.407
1.031
0.761

This will give us 62.9km at 6000rpm in first compared to 52.6km in the normal gearbox, and it will take us to 89.9km at 6000rpm in second compared to 83.3km. Most importantly it will go to 104.8km in second at 7000rpm, so you won't need to bounce of the rev limiter at 7200rpm to get to 100kmh.

Certainly useful for the drag guys :D I'm going to hopefully get them into Kenneth's car on the weekend to confirm they will fit in. At this stage it looks like Dickytim is keen to come and help, and I hope Gly is free as well :D

I'm also going down to another place on next Saturday to poke though their gear sets to see if they have any 2.982 first gears, or any 0.72 5th gears and nick off with them :D As well as obviously report back on if they have multiple sets spare that we could use and get on the cheap, rather than $340 per gear from mitsi!

New gears?? thought u gettin vr4??

Carsten is putting his parts from his old car onto his new car, and these gears are for my purple facelift car which is a manual. This gearset from an evo is compatible with a manual vr4

Gly

got one...
(taking all the (fast/cool) bits off my 25ST to fit to my VR4)

atm i own 2 legnums, 98 2.5L V6 auto NA, and the 99 Manual VR4

brads looking into longer gears for the VR4,
i usually help when it comes to fixing/moding/stripping cars.
(as i have most of the tools, LOL!)

we're all sort of it the same area,
so usually just meet up at who evers house.

Sounds like a winner, will be rapid!

bradc

Valmes, could be good for you on the strip, it will let you take off a lot better and not need to change gear so quickly straight off the line

Kenneth
07-03-2007, 09:44 PM
Have you tried 2nd gear launch valmes? I have heard that he evos do this for really good launches. Obviously there are drive train risks involved, but never the less... might cost a tad extra to get off the line if you were being careful, but could save you that in removing a gear change.

damn, like looking at brand new stuff. tidy and clean.

mean bro!

Do you realise that
1.407 reversed = 0.711 (2 DP)

so basically, if we reverse one of the 3rd gears, then you should get the ratio you want :)

Could do with another holiday :)

But, not so early on in the year.... gorra get meh car sorted first.

less chit/chat - more gear changing :p

Hey - I like your thinking! How are the gears mounted on the shaft? Is this possible? Would there be issues with synchro rings etc?

not sure, only one way to find out really....

Nick, I suggested this to Ken last night, but then I investigated it some more, and 3rd and 4th gear are locked onto the output shaft, while 1st, 2nd, 5th are locked onto the input shaft. I'm not sure exactly why, it looks as if it might be possible to pull off the 3rd and 5th gears on both shafts and swap them, but 1st and 2nd appear to be part of the shaft.

If you look at the 2nd picture and the last picture you can see there is a bit of a locking mechanism to lock 3rd, 4th, 5th onto their shafts, not sure if it is possible to swap them or not though.

Got another gearset today:

2.982
1.950
1.407
1.031
0.720

this is the one I really wanted, with the longer 1st (but not too long like the 2.782 ratio), a longer second and most importantly the long 5th gear.

I'm happy :D

cant get any further without some ring spanners. need to get the gearbox mount off so i can get at some bolts that hold in the selectors. once they are out, i can remove and refit the gears

I finish work at 4:30ish, and i'm just down the road. I'll bring the whole set just in case. I dont have a computer at work, so i'll PM you my cell, and you can let me know where abouts you'll be, or else i can leave them on your doorstep.

Kenneth

Got the spanners.

Still cant get the gears out though!

Brad, you might want to ask ralliart if there is some special way to get them out, if you have to have a certian tool, or if you just have to force them out :(

bradc

ok, I'll check and see if they've got any ideas. What is happening exactly? You can't get the shaft out from the housing?

the gearbox is split, everything is undone (apart from the reverse gear, i dont have the bit to get that out... dont think it should matter though) as far as i know, the gears should lift out. If I look at the gearsets though, the bearing on the end looks like it might be a press fit, so maybe it needs something to pull it out?

**** knows

mpau009

You could take it to Auckland Bearings, theyre just down the road on Diana Drive, http://www.aucklandbearings.co.nz/

Or theres precision bearings up on William Pickering, http://www.whitepages.co.nz/Pages/Search/Details/0,2624,a1281_d2758213,00.html?Name=precision+beari ngs&Loc=auckland&Reg=

They both have a range of pullers and presses, and chances are if you act like you might need to buy some in the future they should do it for you. You could probably get prices for replacements at the same time.

You alright there Kieran?

Seriously though, they look very similar. the only thing I can think of that might cause issues is if
a) the reverse gear is different size
b) the front diff gear is a different size

bradc

apparently you need to lift the crown wheel, and wiggle the selector forks, and basically bash them around until the whole thing falls to pieces.
