assuming 7,000rpm redline

Automatic (http://www.car-videos.com/tools/speedrpm.asp?Car=Select&Num1=225&Num2=45&Num3=17&AxleRatio=3.684&Ratio1=3.789&Ratio2=2.057&Ratio3=1.421&Ratio4=1.000&Ratio5=0.731&Ratio6=&Ratio7=&Redline=7000&Increment=1000&B1=Recalculate) = 186mph

Versus

Manual (http://www.car-videos.com/tools/speedrpm.asp?Car=Select&Num1=225&Num2=45&Num3=17&AxleRatio=4.111&Ratio1=3.333&Ratio2=2.105&Ratio3=1.407&Ratio4=1.031&Ratio5=0.761&Ratio6=&Ratio7=&Redline=7000&Increment=1000&B1=Recalculate) = 160 mph

Why is it that nearly every car manufacturer that sells a particular vehicle with an auto 'option', claims the top speed it always lower on the auto than the manual version?

Because the torque converter takes away a bit of power, and because autos are generally weigh more.

Err unless my eyes deceive me the Auto is better ;)

Its just a theoretical top speed, I doubt if the car would pull 7000rpm in top gear.

it maympull with some added gas INSERT INTO post VALUES (nos :-D )

reminds me of the Honda S2000. Nice 8000 RPM redline!!

As Mo says I am reasonably confident that mine will pull near 7000 INSERT INTO post VALUES (actually 7250 redline) in top.......a bit of extra power and some laughing gas goes a long way! The problem is finding a public highway that is long enough and clear enough!

The thing with Autos is that you'll never get to the max theoretical top speed - because the top speed assumes the mechanical lock is engaged, and it disengages when you are accelerating hard.
The other point is that the tall gearing of autos usually means the car's terminal velocity is below the theoretical top speed.

It is all dependant on power though! Mo and I have lots of it at our disposal! As for accelerating hard, this will not be the case at 150+! Or at least I hope not or I may soil my trousers!

Dave, I found this site on a link you gave regarding the Volvo Bus 1.8s 40-60 discussion.

I saw that the 'performance figures' site also had lots of other good stuff.........just cant wit to find an airfield to test it out!
