 Continuing the MAP2 saga, i have made some good progress, got the unit in, got the LC-1 in and running the car, all seemed good. I configured the analogue output on the LC-1 to log through the MAP2, buy adjusting the AFR : Voltage outputs to match the PLX table i chose in the MAPCAL2 software. It idles at 14.7, so i'm fairly confident i set that up correctly.

Tommorrow i'm going on a 1000k road trip over easter, and although i didnt manage to get a chance to wire up the boost control, since my laptop battery only just arrived, i thought i would use the chance to build a map with the auto learn.

Just been for a 15minute drive around home, to see how it all works outside the garage, and what my fuel is like, given the soot and popping i had been dealing with for a while, i was expecting it to be poor..

....Nows where my head starts to hurt, in 11degree ambient, with factory 8psi, and only my intake mods changing the car from stock, i am running an apparent AFR of 12.5-13.5 under boost:inquisiti, except for once when i floored it in 2nd, and it held around 10.5:inquisiti :inquisiti. As i lift off, it goes from 12 ish to 10, the to 15.5, then settles back to closed loop.

So... what the **** is going on?

It kinda makes sense since i was hitting fuel cut quite easily in that sort of temperature range at .9bar.. But on the Dyno, i was reasonably okay on my fuel curve even at higher boost, would an octane booster, versus the shell 95 i usually run explain this away, or have i (more than likely/pan) screwed something up? The only changes since then, have been the cold air feeds, and the VTA bov.

The only other thing can think of is that the LC-1 is sending a richer signal to the ecu than is reality, but then that doesnt explain why it idles on 14.7..

I wish i had a bit more time to sort this out, but any advice, opinions or suggestions would be great, and hopefully i will have a much fuller picture of my car at stock boost when i get back on monday.

Could this mean i am seeing unmetered air getting in somewhere? Or would a leaking flexi be to blame?

i blame the VTA,

try the stoc bov and see how that goes?

Yeah i was expecting it to run rich when it dumps, which it seems to do, but i dont get how it would affect it under boost, even if it was leaking i dont see why i would be so close to lean.

Also i'd have to get a replacement rubber pipe since i butchered mine so the VTA didnt drag on the ground:thinking:

I think that will be my first port of call once i get back.

Perhaps the stock ecu isnt quite as well tuned for lower octanes versus the Japanese petrols?

Check on your calibration of your LC1 output in map cal. I was under the impression there is a specific calibration drop down for it, rather than using the PLX one.

Cheers,

Ben.

what about the repaired stock boost sol?
and all the t-pipes that have been sealed with screws?
how air tight are they?

hi Ben, the MAPCAL2 has the choice for the LM-1, which is 1-2v. But since i can choose anything from 0-5v from the LC-1, i went with the PLX table, and used 0v:10AFR, and 5v:20AFR. Is this acceptable, or should i try changing the outputs to suit the LM-1 option?

I got the info from a suggestion from one of the MAP techs on their forum, but it didnt have any outcomes from anyone else..

There is a lot of epoxy holding my plastic piping together, solenoid included, but i'm pretty sure they are tight, theres definately no obvious leaks, and i put a piece of white cloth over top of my blanked piping, so it should show up dirty if its sucking any air in that way.

now when you say under boost, and it is 12-13:1, is that full WOT, or partial throttle? If it is partial then those sort of figures are healthy, as you said under full throttle in 2nd gear it goes down to 10.5:1 which is richer than you would want, but not dangerous. Going back up to 15.5 when lifting off is fine, the whole point of fuel injection is that it can turn the injectors off completely when not needed.

I would suggest you do a run starting from 1500rpm in all 5 gears up to whatever point you deem necessary (ie as a safe and responsible driver up to 99kmh), and see what happens. Running at WOT with the revs below 4000rpm you shouldn't be down to 10.5:1, you should be in the 13:1 range, maybe 12:1. Infact if you look at the dyno chart you can see it starts off that high, and gradually goes down through the range.

You may be right, since i was on public roads and didnt fancy getting arrested, but i have had it absolutely mashed 2 or 3 times, (that was in 4th) and watched it not even dip below 12.5. My plan is to take the back roads today and run a decent log (havent told my passengers yet.. but hey) so i can have a good look from a standing start, chances are its just me not knowing whats going on as usual:scholar:.

what rpm did it go up to in 4th when it was still at 12.5?

when i thrash mine with map ecu2 and lm-1 set at 1v-2v i still get in the 10afr region.on light throttle it goes to about 13 afr.

NO! it is not

different sensors/wideband units have a different curve to their readout. you need to use the correct sensor config.

you have the program to re-program your LC-1? (you should have)

open up the LM-1 config file, look at the figures in the file.
you should see lambda figures and voltage (i think voltage may be on the top... cant remember, it should be obvious though)
Find out what lambda is 1v and which is 2v, and program these into the LC-1 for the second output. Then use the LM-1 config file.

This is really important mike, you need to be able to trust your O2 readings.

Ken is correct as always :D

standard output 2 on the LM-1 gives you 0v-2v swing with 1v being 10 afr and 2v being 20 afr . Connect this output to the yellow wire on the map ecu and selct the LM1 config file . Tunning without 100% correct AFR's is like Russian roulette with a semi auto matic pistol

If you want a hand, bring it around to my place after work one day during the week and ill take a look at it :)

If you want a hand, bring it around to my place after work one day during the week and ill take a look at it :)

thats sounds like a good idea, i see what you mean, if the curve is not the same, then it wont matter if those two points are correct. I'll give you a text shortly.

i think the fuelling info i got should still be good for a starting point, it looks really rough, but i filled a lot of the table, and ran it to the red line in 1,2,3,4, and up to the speed cut a handful of times. I'll bring it for you to cast an eye over.

the main problem im having now seems to be nothing to do with the MAP, my battery keeps going flat/Grrr Had to buy a new one in the middle of nowhere this morning, we drove for 2 hours with the sub on, and map, lc-1 etc, filled up with gas, got back in and the engine couldnt even manage a full crank. Hopefully its not going to be an ongoing problem..

Received a ecumap file last night haven't tried it yet but if you need a base map to tune from you could give it a go.

That would be great if you wanted to post it up:2thumbsup Thanks Paul.
I started with that basic Karman Vortex map, and let it try and adjust itself, but with the VTA bov, its recording way too much fuel at the lower edges of the map.

The thing i wanted to ask you as well, was if you actually got the MAP2 to control boost with the stock solenoid before you went to the aftermarket one? I just gave it a go using the pin from the other thread, but even from 20% to 60% gain it wont raise off of 7.5 - 8psi (which im now guessing is no control at all). If it worked for you, then its probably just that mine is damaged from sitting plugged in but not being plumbed in for over a year. Either way i might start looking for a replacement.

Paul C

i remember having mine boosting but didn't really adjust it much before i installed aftermarket. you have 2 purple wires one is for switched output 3 and the other is for ebc control. Make sure you have the right one connected as you wont get any boost control if wrong way round.tried uploading map it wont have it so i will email it.Havent tried it myself but think it will need adjust from what i have learn't so far it looks abit lean but it could be used for a base map and then worked on.

Cool thanks for that, i'll transfer that to my laptop shortly and see how it compares, heres the raw data if anyone else wants it, i just copied it into text edit from the .tbl file.

I'll pop out and double check my wiring colours in a second as well. Fingers crossed.

thats a lot of zero's, even the japs wouldn't have had that many at pearl harbour :)

Yeah thats the full table file, its only the first fuel thats worth looking at, but i figured that it would need all of it to load properly.

I had a look at that map, and it certainly looks leaner than the one i have got so far, it would be good to post up the 3d map like BDA used to do, so you could see them, but i dont quite know how to do that at the moment.

The bad news is there is definately something up with the boost control, i have the right wire, configure the switched output2 to EBC, set a fairly ambitious set of boost controls, and still nothing. There is definately no leaks with the solenoid plumbing. I might have a look around for something else, or try something else after work tomorrow.

Tried the map seems spot on. the tps increases the richness of the map by 5% under load so doesn't lean out. So far hit 17.5psi and then fuel cut. Didn't have boost set up but is now. Seems really healthy will do more runs and check out. The map itself seems right will just put a increase acoss the board using the map % adjust function.

or you could steal yours back?

doz the stock solenoid work the same way as the aftermarket ones?

That sounds really promising:pimp2: I'll still wait until Kenneth has had a look at my AFR monitoring before i let the MAP2 have a go at running things tho..

Iv already book marked that one, hopefully it'll stay cheap since it has no controller. Its not a big issue at the moment, theres still a heap of other stuff i want to have a play with, i'll just keep an eye out for a spare one.

I'm not sure if the stock solenoid functions the same or not, it sounds like someone had used it, but that it relates to some measurement in the MAF or something? so maybe it doesnt pulse the same.

Stock solonoid bleeds pressure where the aftermarket one is plumbed inline

Had slight idle problem wher if i accelerated i a set way the car would be abit jerky. found the map was abit rich at around -4.1psi/400-600

:2thumbsup Iv sorted the PLX table issues today, turns out that the PLX table is as close as possible to linear, same as the output on the LC-1, so that is correct. After that, i rewrote the PLX.o2 file so that 0v is now 8AFR, and 5v is 18AFR. This is because my car is running rich under WOT, very rich, and i wanted to see further than just 10AFR

Iv switched to BP Ultimate 98 permanently now that they have it on my route to work, and to help prevent knock, but from my logging so far, i am hitting a consistent AFR of 10.2 at WOT (similar to my Dyno runs) I think the problem before was that although i was flooring it, i was lifting off a fraction when it hit full boost.

Also the VTA BOV, is causing the AFR to dip into the 10s when i lift off regardless of boost.
