OK its a long shot, but it just might work..................

I have been researching INSERT INTO post VALUES (dabbling) with the diagnostic port INSERT INTO post VALUES (under the steering wheel and to the left a bit) and I have found that you can connect a laptop to it to read diagnostic codes........you can also display real time data such as speed, rpm, o2 sensor voltage, inlet temperature, timing advance, tps position etc etc. Now my problem is that I have got a cable that conforms to the ISO 9141 standard used by most if not all Jap manufacturers and a lot of European ones........but it doesn't work on my VR4 :INSERT INTO post VALUES ( I spoke to the dealers and they were very helpful, it seems though that the VR4 is different to ALL other Mitsubishis and THEY need a special cable. Anyone know the specs of this cable as I really want to monitor this info!

As I say it is a long shot as it is very specialised info, but being a bunch of VR4 nutters someone somewhere may be able to help!

:rolleyes5

couldn't find a wiring diagram for it.. but its called a MUT-II INSERT INTO post VALUES (the thing that plugs into it..)

ill have another look through the documentation.. maybe i miss read it.. cos it shows a few things.. what each wire does etc.. but, didnt look like the data was in full.. and seemed to be more focused on SRS.

will check it out tomorrow.. need to dash..

Ok stupid question :d
Have you installed the OBD2 software ????

Errr.....check!

The device I have is based on the ELM 323 chip and it allows you to use the serial port to send commands to the Car. These commands are either requests for fault code data or requests for real time data. For example sending 01 11 will return the throttle position sensor as a hexedecimal value, this can then be converted to decimal to give you the position. There is no real need to have software as such, but when I had problems I downloaded some software and it exhibited the same problem. I want to try it on my wifes Fiat Punto, but she wont let me! Looks like it will have to be the father in laws Omega! They all use the same ISO 9141 standard for communication.

Interestingly a lot of newer cars are using a CAN bus system. I know lots about this as I worked on an aircraft project that used it! Its a cool system as it distributes the control to items within the car, each sensor essentially has its own microcontroller that pumps out info on a 2 wire bus. This includes all engine and transmission data, along with mundane things like having microcontroller in the light units! Its distributed computing at its best! The idea is it gets rid of the traditional mess of wires and replaces it with just 4 wires that carry power and data to all electronic units on the car.

Oh my god, I am SUCH a geek!

Now this is interesting info.... Always wanted to get into car re-programming:)

You say the VR-4 has a different connector... Would the GLS be any good to you?

The guy at Mitsubishi said I could probably read a UK Galant.............a go with the GLS may prove useful! The connector is the same, what is different is the databus protocol I guess????

Mr Mitsubishi was really useful.........NOT!

Dear Mr Akers

Thank you for your email received on 8 December 2003.

Unfortunately we do not have a technical department here who would be able
to help and that vehicle is not one that we import, hence we have no
information on it.

My only other advise would be to contact the Mitsubishi Owner's Club who may
be able to help with any enquiries on 01451 850348.

I am sorry that I can't be of further assistance, but should you have any
further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

What a pile of crap! When I've rung Mitsi HQ INSERT INTO post VALUES (i presume that's who you emailed?) they're usually very good! Try giving them a bell, and make out it's a Ralliart Import maybe?!
