who here has a aftermarket cooler?
and still has there frontal impact beam?

wanting to buy a larger cooler for mine.
but i want to buy one where i can still keep the impact beam intact.
and im not keen on angle mounting the cooler.

or at least most of it there.

most of the aftermarket coolers ive seen fitted here are 600*300*76
but the impact beam is lost.

so how has a aftermarket cooler, and still has there impact beam?
what size is the core and what is the overall size of the cooler?

Thanks

As you know mine is a 600x300x100mm and the impact bar is still there, just modified slightly. I would ideally go for a 600x250x100mm anyway because a lot of the top of the intercooler is covered by bumper anyway, and obviously that would be a smaller volume to fill up (less lag)

Maybe we could get a group buy going for 600x250x100?

Interesting!!!

But does bigger intercooler really worth the price?
How many HP will gain?

If you up the boost and are running a tuned car, then yes it definately helps.

it also improves fuel economy

My Greddy Type-V (V-SPL) is fitted with the standard impact bar. I had to give the bottom of the impact bar a little, ahem... 'tickle' with a hammer - the seams where the spot welds are do foul, but a few blows with a hammer and you'll fold them out the way.

Core size is 186 x 600 x 76.

More Details here, page 49.

Should be a nice drive! LOL, I thought GLY wanted to have a look. I will take some pics tomorrow. The piping from the IC is solid up to behind the lower end of the headlights

bradc

Lee, the stock one is quite big, and it is very good for a stock one too, but if you up the boost and things then it is definately worth doing the upgrade.

I hope these photos are clear enough. They show the installation from the front, left and right sides more close-up, solid piping up to the battery box on the left side and solid piping emerging from the opening behind the right headlight. I did not have the heart to take off the bumper for a better view!

as discussed the other day Gly, mine has the impact bar, just modified, i.e. cut hammered and re welded, a painful job and mine shrank in the process when it was heated, but a bit of jumping and it was all good.

Hi guys, just wanted to add something to this thread.. I saw an intercooler on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200109395262&rd=1&rd=1

dimension is 600x230x76

would this fit without modding/hacking my support bar? i will be the one putting this on and as much as possible.. i dont wanna hack/cut/chop anything that would probably help me survive an accident..

inputs are very much appreciated..

That intercooler looks nice, I wouldn't be able to tell you how well it would be able to fit on a 7G though, send a PM to 'ako' he would be able to help.

an evo 4 size cooler fits behind on the the 7G with minimal trimming of the bumper i beleive

Don't worry about the bar helping you survive an accident, it'll only prevent extra damage at very low speed impacts eg <30km/h or so would be my guess. Anything much more and they dont help you any thats what airbags and seatbelts are for. Unless by helping you survive an accident you meant helping the car survive a weeny accident. :D

How do you figure that?
That bar spreads impact load over the crush zones in the front of the car. Without it you run the risk of either having a power pole cut straight down the center and put the engine in your lap, or worse, having a partial head on and only having one side of the car to absorb the impact.

I'm more talking about hitting at possibly fatal speeds. If this happens there's gonna be so much damage to the car that I don't think that the bar will help enough to save a life. Sure it'll help, but I can't see by how much from what happened to it in my little crash. Course it did a fair bit of help in my wee crash.

Kenneth
28-05-2007, 03:35 AM
When you get to "possibly fatal" speeds is exactly when the impact beam is going to be most useful.

The beam is designed to be effective in frontal accidents. It is also designed to keep you alive, rather than protect the car. In fact, I would think it is designed to maximise damage to the car as so to spread the impact over as much of the vehicle as possible.

And to cap it all off, if they didn't work, manufacturers wouldn't waste the money to put them on the cars in the first place.

Its a safety device, not a damage minimising device.

Think of it as a side impact beam, but in the front. (hence, front impact beam)

If you want to see how important side impact beams are, ill take a photo of the one in my crashed Legnum. Without them, I might not be here today.

If you hit a power pole without a front impact beam, right in the centre of the bonnet, chances are that it would cut straight through the body work, straight into the engine and push the engine straight into the cabin. I wouldn't rate your chances of survival at any reasonable speed.

bradc

Yeah I pretty much agree with that, it is very easy to see exactly where the impact beam is in your door.

btw did you get my email earlier?

Me too, me too! btw... are there any known manufactorers who produce intercoolers in this size?

Goku

There is a place down here in chch that makes Bar and plate or fin and tube coolers to your specifications. They are really good quality, far better than some of the ones I have seen coming out of Trade me, E-bay... and even some of the HKS/Blitz ones. (though they might have been fakes)

Do they have a website or emailadress? (I don't think I'll be able to drop by there the coming weeks  )

Thanks!

Thats their website, but it's not very helpful, most of the links don't work o.O

Dropping them an email might be the best option.
