Hey all,

Got my gearbox out, and into a couple of pieces. This is the offending bearing... It seems to have at least 4 if not 5 ball bearings missing... not sure where they are :undecided

My question is, how do you get the two shafts out? I've got it down this far:

I just want to be sure its completely cleaned out before it gets reassembled. The offending seal that caused all my problems, apparently costs $26+ GST from my friendly neighbourhood mitsi dealer :2thumbsup

The dearest part of this little exercise is my new heavy duty clutch, which I'm getting for $40 more than a standard one (I love mates rates ) BUT, I have to wait 2 weeks until their order comes in from Australia.

The bearing is apparently $74+GST ex Japan, but thats only if I can't find a suitable one thru a bearing specialist.

I'm so looking forward to having my baby back on the road! Next step: save for the cam belt to be done!

lift the crown wheel up a little bit, and wiggle the two shafts like mad! Kenneth might be able to explain it better than that, but there is no nice way of doing it!

Kenneth is the man to talk to, from memory though you have to remove the selector fork bolts, and take out the reverse gear (i think 4 hex type bolts on the side or something?), then as brad says, it was a case of wiggling and lifting them out together

Have you removed the items ringed.
There are a few external items you need to remove to get the shafts out.
I cant remember all of the 1s that need removing.

you need to strip everything off the gearbox.

At the bottom of the gearbox is a black steel bit that is bolted on. you will have to take this off and then remove (there is a odd bolt on the side) the extra gear that is there (for reverse)

this will allow the bearing at the bottom to rise up. the whole lot should then lift out fairly easily.

Do you mean that wanky looking hex sort of star shaped one? Thats the only one giving me grief! I'll persevere and get that out and hope for the best.

The bearing is non-standard I found out today, so while they could sell me one "almost' exactly the same for $23, I need to get the one through Mitsubishi for $74. Doesn't bother me too much, it's not like we are talking hundreds, and if it means I don't have to pull this thing apart again then so be it!

What difference was there to make it "almost" the same?

Yes, thats the bolt. I ended up using vice grips (mole grips??) to get that bolt off... will probably replace it with a different bolt.

Once that is off, the gears and the selector forks will just lift out (though you may have to jiggle it a little to release the bearings)

If it is same as the FWD. Then there is a blastic cover in the back need to be removed. So you can see the lock washer. which should be removed first.
(My english is bad !! I don't know how to explain that)

The inner... erm... "bit" that the shaft goes thru has a rounded edge where it meets the shaft, instead of a 90' edge. They couldn't be 100% sure that the clip would hold it properly.

I picked up the new bearing and seal yesterday, turns out all that chewed up metal actually holds the bearings apart.

Now I'm just waiting on the clutch.

Its apart! Hopefully tomorrow I'll give it a clean up and reassemble it all.

Got the flywheel machined today. Only cost $34 which I'm not gonna moan at! When putting the flywheel back on, do I have to do them up to a certain torque setting?

Still waiting for the clutch to arrive... :snore:

Wheres the cheapest/best place to get exhaust gaskets from? Mine are buggered!

Name dropping... I like it!

What are they worth? I need the two at the front, and two for either side of the cat from where I removed its innards when I got the car and kind of just gooed up the already broken gaskets... he he

20-30 each from mitsi parts...

that said... if you have them off the car go to a pitstop near you and see if they can supply a gaskit that will fit instead of the mitsi ones.

Priced up another bearing I need, and the gaskets thru Ralliart, and they're only like $1o each. Roll on Friday when my new clutch should be here!

Seems you guys are keen on Amsoil AGT - SAE 80W-90 GL-4 Synthetic Gear Lube for the trans, what do you put in the transfer case? I've done a search and come up with GL-5 - SAE-90, is there an amsoil product for this also? Where is the cheapest place to get these from?

send a pm to 'amsoil' he will be able to help you out. We get a 5 or 10% discount at the people that distribute amsoil out in west auckland as well. :)
