The bottun on the top of the knob can be prised off. Then undo the bolt underneath.
with a flat blade screwdriver pry the top button
hold the button not to be sprung away
remove button and spring
unscrew the nut inside
correct?

most of the UK owners arn't early 20's i can only think of 3 that are early 20's rest are late 20's, 30's and up to middleage (and beyond infact)
(no offence)
if i detach the auto gear box from the engine, can i somehow keep the gear oil inside for a long time?

aslong as you block the axle seals yes you can. some will come out for around the torque converter too
why not just drain it all out in to a container and refill it later?

Gear box is to be detached
once it is off the engine, it may be stored for some time, may be months or more
keeping the gear oil inside to protect inside, this is my thought
correct me please if its wrong
im sure it will be fine?
the oil would run off the gears anyway, when sitting for a lon period of time
leaving them on half covered??
ive left the ST for a month or two with no issues?
except a water pump seal dried up and started leaking,
also i beleive breakers/wreckers dont leave fuild in them?
