We're all aware that certain (medical) drugs must be taken with caution in the correct doses at the correct time of day. Some drugs require additional precautions such as a drug my elderly mother takes. She must drink plenty of water constantly or the drug starts to get too concentrated in her system. One side effect noted with this drug is Psychosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosis).

A couple of days ago my mother fell in her bathroom and has been taken to a small hospital specialising in physiotherapy to get her damaged leg back on the mend. However, when my brother and I visited we were quite taken aback by some of her comments. We NOW know what has happened and she seems OK but it's amazing what tricks the mind can play on us when drugs are involved.

It seems she did not have much water to drink for 48 hours. Here are some of the things she said:

Mum: Rich I'm fearful for my life in here.
Me: Why?
Mum: I can't talk in here - I'll tell you when I get home.

Mum: I'm absolutely starving in here - they haven't fed me all day.
Me: Here is a Yoghurt - do you want it now?
Mum: Oh yes please.
Nurse arrives: Hello.
Me: Hi - mum says she is starving - when is next meal?
Nurse: Oh? She just ate a huge plate of meat and mashed potato 15 mins ago.

Mum to my brother David: Careful what you do - there's a camera watching us.
David: Camera? Where?
Mum: There (points)
David: Mum, that's a clock!
Mum: I know it's a clock NOW - you silly boy. They moved the camera because I saw it. Anyway, don't even say anything as they are recording everything.

Mum: I can't trust you any more David. You're in collusion with them. The lady in the next bed was taken away in the night - they did her in. (We checked - she had a heart attack and was taken to another hospital)

My youngest daughter visited with David ........
Mum: Oh nooooo Sarah, I hope you aren't involved with them as well.

When Sarah hugged her on leaving:
Mum: (whispered in Sarah's ear) Be very, very careful dear, and watch your back or they'll get you as well.

Well, she seemed OK when I visited last night so she is probably hydrated again and we can now laugh at the incident ....... but it's a bit scary when you don't know what's happening. Did she hit her head when falling etc etc.

Feck!

Amusing in hindsight, I guess, but it must have been a bit hair raising at the time.

I have an elderly grandmother who had her fifth hip-replacement last year. They did a lot of work on her under local anasthetic, due to her age. Hearing a 90 year old church goer who you've always known to be straight-laced tell you she thinks she had a good trip is a bit of an eye opener too!

Hope your mum gets well soon.

Hope your Mum gets well soon Rich.....

We had a very similar thing a couple of years ago with my Nan...

She was very badly dehydrated whilst in hospital and was suffering from delusions and was very out of caracter, to the point where she would tell people to Eff off and the like. This coming from someone I had never even heard say the word Fart.

My dad was on steroids for a while and he was similar, he didn't really know what was happening
