Thanks to the feedback from Wodjno & Louis in particular, coupled with my own discovery of the Mitsubishi EVO service manual and the recommended procedure for bleeding the AYC, I have now done this successfully too.

I have written an article on the procedure - available in the Article Library

Good write up k

just a couple of things i do different but not necessary.

1 take the road wheels off and use the nuts to re secure discs for safety reasons.(more stable, no rotational forces from wheels)

2 use a tie rap around throttle cable and the front brace bar to get 1000/2000 rpm(also can be a 1 man job but i would advise some one with you for safety reasons)

3 turn t/c off

4 put in to tip and select 3rd (just so you get no gear changes)

5 i use more than 1l off atf to make sure it is flushed nice and clean (on average 3l)

Oh yeah, I had to do step 3 as well. I'll add that to the guide.

I will need to do mine again next service as I don't think I got all the crappy fluid out - but it's certainly better than it was!
