what dio you mean prenty of fuild?

to much will wreck the box,
also the wrong fluid will wreck the box.

when was the fuild last fully flushed? (no just a auto sump drop)

also normal servicing does not include autobox servicing

Its goes fine on the motorway, like it takes a wee while to warm up,but then its fine till next time it sits for a wee while.

does it actually start off in 3rd gear, or does it just feel really sluggish as if it might be starting in 3rd gear?

Maybe try an ECU reset for the Auto Box!

Disconnect the batter for 1-2 min then reconnect.

This would be the quickest and cheapest first thing to try.
