just a question to any one who has experience of driving an auto on the strip when you are sitting on the start line how do you get the best start ?just putting the foot down from idle in drive? or having the car in neutrel holding the revs up then when you are ready to go flick into drive( or will you damage the gearbox this way)

just leave it in D, rev it as high as you can with the brake on, then go for it!

Best is to rev the engine in N, as the engine is decelerating, put your foot on the brake. The idea is that the engine should be pulling better vacuum and you get more assistance from the brake booster.

THEN shift into D, and rev it as high as possible without moving. I would keep an eye on your trasmission fluid temp, and also make sure your fluid is not burnt after each launch. You may want to get a transmission cooler too.

This is VERY hard on the fluid, and also the torque converter.

Even with your left foot planted firmly on the brake, you'll struggle to keep the car stationary above about 3,000 rpm.

There is no need to go above 3000rpm though, the cars take off so fast even at 2500rpm

I've never had any issues with keeping car stationary, even in excess of 3000rpm /pan

As well as your ATF and torque convertor, it's also hard on your output shaft, driveshafts, rear diff.......etc.

In fairness, several members have done and continue to do it with no *apparent* ill effects, but I wouldn't recommend it.
