Hi there, good afternoon.

I'm new here, and I need a bit of help with my car...
I've bought a Galant 2001 2.0 from my company last month, it was first bought from main dealer here in UK, so I suppose the car is not an import.
I want to put an air induction kit in it, but I've been unable to find anything anywhere.
The only place I found something was in the States, they have plenty of kits there, but the smallest engine for this car overthere is a 2.4L, and the engine is placed a bit differently than in the cars here.
Does anyone know of any kit I could put in my car?
I've checked K&N, Green, Pipercross, PowerTec, and a couple more with no luck...
Any info will be very appreciated, thanks :)

Hi and Welcome!!

I am afraid I don't know the answer to your question... however the former "God of GLS Power" Kieran will probably answer shortly.

Hi and welcome to the club. I'll give Kieran a nudge to get him to answer your questions if he can - he should be on line later.

Welcome to club VR-4!

Right. K&N do a replacement panel filter for the GLS, part number is on here somewhere, I think it's the same as the V6-24. I think you can look it up on the K&N UK (Not the USA) website.

Regarding an induction kit, well as you've found there's nothing off the shelf, but a suitable MAF adaptor and then a filter will work. Iboots runs a Pipercross foam thing I think, and Scottish Ian (former GLS owner) used a generic kit from the USA with a MAF adapter.

A word of caution though.... I fitted a HKS Super Power Flow to my V6 Sport and whilst it did free a bit right at the top end when you were pelting down the motorway, the lack of cold air feed screwed it up around town. Overall it lowered the flexibility of the car, so it was removed very quickly! So make sure to sort a good cold air feed if you want to go down this route - but especially as it's a non-turbo, I would strongly advise you sick with the standard airbox and a more free flowing filter.:scholar:

/Welcome

As you have found out there is nothing off the shelf for our cars - other than a couple of kits on eBay from time to time of unknown quality

I had an induction kit on for a while, and it was a bit of a home brew job - as Kieran mentioned you will need a Maf adapter like this one

http://www.funkystyling.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=444000156

which will take a wide vareity of cone/mushroom filters - I went with this one

http://www.funkystyling.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=1843and and a good screw clamp fitting

next thing is to secure it - the mounting points exposed by the absent airbox are a good place to customise a metal bracket

Hot air going through your filter is not good - and a heat shield like this one

http://www.apiroautostyle.com/products.php?product_id=43

should help, as well as keeping the original air feed - I also added an extra air intake ducting from the front bumper.....

.... you can take it a bit further with metal piping to replace the black plastic after the maf, but the breather pipe needs to go in there somewhere ?

I had an improvement from this setup in terms of rr figures, but how much of this was down to the induction and the other changes I had made I dont know - I certainly didn't see an increase in fuel economy as some manufacturers claim!

I reverted back to standard in an effort to diagnose another problem and apart from the lack of noise :pimp2: I dont notice much difference

It is widley commented that induction works best combined with exhaust mods - pushing the cost up somewhat!

And steer clear of anything yank orientated - while the 2.4 is very similar, the battery is housed near the suspension and the air filter where our battery is

Next time I'll give the K&N panel a bash

You pays yer money and takes yer choice..........

Hi there, good night.

Well, many thanks to you all for all your answers, now I got an idea of how hard is going to be to modify this car just a tiny bit
But I won't quit, never...
Right, I have a few links to kits from eBay, but yes, eBay in the States...
They all say for 2.4L and 3.0L engines, but by the pictures they look like they could probably fit in our engines here... maybe?
I'll probably ask them and send them a picture of my engine bay, to see if they think they will fit, and see what they say... the delivery cost is not that much, if any of them fits it'll well worth it anyway :)
I'll ask them and wait their answers, I'll post them here in case anyone is interested, thanks.

This looks to be similar to your links (that dont work for me :scholar: ) but made for uk cars -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/97-01-MITSUBISHI-GALANT-PROTON-GTI-COLT-AIR-INDUCTION_W0QQitemZ180119822307QQihZ008QQcategoryZ 36680QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the American ones should fit as far as the Maf adapter and filter go but the piping would put the filter down below the headlight - not a bad place for it to go but your battery is in the way!

for the uk one - never seen one of these kits before, but I can kind of see how it goes together - but in my view the number of joints after the maf is just asking for trouble

Basically you cant win with an induction kit.
If you install a pod filter directly onto the MAF (Air flow) sensor, then you get hot under-bonnet air that screws with the performance.
If you get a Cold Air Intake kit (CAI) then you introduce a bend in the pipework before the MAF sensor. This bend causes the air to swirl, usually resulting in incorrect sensor readings. Usually the result is over-fueling and poor performance.

Your choice in the end, but in my mind if you want to increase performance you are heading down the wrong road. If you want to waste fuel, get a VR-4. At least then you waste that fuel going fast.

The one you put from eBay in UK, I saw it also a few days ago, but it looks like the piping is wrong, it doesnt seem right...
I see the american kits are of 2 kinds, CAI and short RAM, and the short RAM I think with a heat shield could probably work, but I'm not so sure now, after all your answers... :speechles

Kenneth
After reading a bit my choice was to go for the short RAM, not the CAI, and I really thought that putting one of these and one heat shield would probably stop the heat coming to the filter, and using the stock air ducting box from the front it'd be alright...
Now I'm not totally sure, damn, but I'll keep looking and making it work in my head...

Thanks to you all for the info :)

I received an email from PiperCross, I asked them for a kit for my car, this is their answer:

Hi,

We don't list a specific kit for the Galant, but as it runs the same air
flow meter as the Lancer, the kit we list for the Evo 4/5/6 can fit onto
your engine, however due to the different chassis the bracket will not fit.

Regards,

HI there, good night.

found this from INJEN, I asked them about a kit and they sent me a pdf file with the instructions for a kit for a Galant my year, but in the states... I think I could make it fit on my car though...
Let me know your thoughts :)

i just went for the K&N panel filter in the original air box

what Kieran said (A word of caution though....
