View Full Version : How not to spend £3000!

Would you all like a laugh?

One of my housemates has recently decided to upgrade to a new car. Now... He had a huge 72bhp in his 1.25 r reg fiesta and clearly not satisfied with being pinned to the seat he has taken the plunge and gone out and spent £3000, all of which he has borrowed as he's one of the great unwashed like myself, on a Y reg 90000mile fiesta zetec s.
He has for some reason got it into his head that this £3000 is a worthwhile investment in a quick (101bhp) car, as he is thinking about maybe stripping it out and using it on track.

The beauty of it all is that for some unknown reason he thinks that this thing really is quick and should easily keep up with the GTi 6 and the bm325 that are sitting on our driveway. Although he is a bit wary of the leggie!

I suppose i am writing this as i would like someone to point out why you would spend that much money on a car that is so crap? You would think that after owning a fiesta you may think to yourself... hang on why dont a buy a decent car?

Then again, for someone who has crashed 3 times in 16months and spun on to a roundabout in full view of the police, maybe 10bhp would be too much!

Sorry if ive offended any Zetec drivers out there, but he just doesnt listen to advice!

what would you spend your £3k on?

I really like the 323F, I take it either :

1. They are pretty good especially supercharged. :scholar:

or

2. You are being sarcastic and they suck. :inquisiti

Hopefully it's no.1 and as I could get one and charge it while in Germany! :afro:

Wouter used to have a 323 before his Vr4 so i would say the first......

Them little Fiestas are 'Nippy' - that's for sure. We used to get those shape fiestas as hire cars and they're cracking - the handling is excellent. However, fast they are not!

Interestingly, I recently had a new-shape Fiesta Zetec-S to go on a journey..... Oh dear, they've spoiled it!/pan

I agree with Kieran, the handling on the Fiesta's of that Vintage is excellent.

I drove over the tops between Manchester and Leeds many times in a purple (eeeggghhhh) renter Fiesta.

loadsa fun.

Certainly not what i'd plumb £3000 into. I mean, fancy throwing that much money at something so crap

My choices for a £3000 car;

E28 M535i get a concourse car for that dosh
E30 325 on your recommendation
Phase 1 GTi-6 and of had change
Civic 1.6 VTi 160bhp goodness and independant suspension alround would make for a great track car
CRX VTEC as above
Skyline GTS-T
Clio Willy

this list is almost endless for a better chunk of metal to sink his borrowed cash into. Tell him he's made a booboo and should take it back for a full refund.

out of all of those options Steve, I'd go with the skyline, but considering he managed to spin a fiesta in front of the police, a rwd turbo'd car probably isn't the best option :)

Well i havent had the heart to tell him that he's bought something that does 60 in 10.2 seconds. But then again i'm sure after the K&N and neons are fitted he'l be doing 10.2 second quaters!

Its a lot of wedge to blow on a shopping car!

Still he will be at the shops faster now.

In all honesty i suppose its what floats your boat. with a car like that i wouldnt bother with go mods, just show. I cant really get to excited about making my mrs' celica go faster, but i'll hapilly lower it and put wheels on it!

Cheers,

Ben.

nice list... I'd maybe add an Alfa - take your pick on which model really, depending on how old/how many miles.

It'll sound far better than most, and be a stylish place to sit inside. And let's face it, there aren't too many ugly Alfas about.

Back on topic, I wouldn't buy a ford with £3k in my pocket. I have never been a fan, and whilst there are some good cars with that badge on, there have always been other cars I would rather own.

Small hot hatch? - Peugeot nearly always beats Ford IMO and there are other individual cars out there that do too.

Kieran

Peugeot almost beats being stuck in a lift with a flatulent Frenchman whilst stabbing your eyes out with a fork...

Don't worry Nick, I corrected your little boo-boo. :scholar:

To be fair those age Zetec S's are quite nippy and handle rather well foir what they are.

Not as nippy or as good handling as one of these:

Very similar performance to a V6, but will do tight turns MUCH better. In a straight line, the V6 might just have the edge.

I'm not jumping up to defend Peugeot's honour here, more small cars in general but you have to bear in mind the majority of people that buy a hot hatch do so because they want the credentials, most people can't drive quickly safely for toffee... IMHO of course.

I'm liking your style :fingerpistols:

Loads of interesting stuff around for sub-1000, £3k and the world's your lobster.

Me, I'd buy my old car (http://www.no-rice.com/forum/index.php?p=vt&tid=9306) back. Should leave around £1000 in change and eat the GTI-6 for breakfast. ;)

That nursery was never called gaytime? how on earth was that approved in this day and age?

Anywhoo, lovely motor Dan, and I can fully understand the choice.

So to add to the 3k car choice:

Throbbe'd old Scirocco
Any Alfa 'because they're butiful' as per Will boy (I agree but still, reliablitlty?)

Sorry Nick, but I have to back up PSB here.... As Hordak will attest, even the mighty GTi 180 is V6 food in a straight line. The V6 grunt is there whist the GTi engine is still getting out of bed!

In fairness, I would not say the same around a tight corner, obviously! The Pug would have turned the corner whilst the V6 would be selecting a target to understeer into!*

*=Don't take that as a compliment... After turning the corner, the Poo-Grot would obviously fall to bits, whilst the Galant (if it made it) would go on, take a direct hit from a daisy cutter and still soldier on, requiring maybe just a quick oil change, etc. etc, Rubarb Rubarb.....

you guys need to have more 4wd manual v6's over there, they are a great handling car with just enough power to have fun with, but not so much power that it is dangerous like a vr-4 :)

Now thinking about it we have found the odd copy of gaytimes lying around in his room...... maybe your on to something with the vasaline. Maybe he should just paint the gaytec s pink and be done with it!

Not that it really matters, as it will be nicely camoflaged in some ditch very soon!

if you go onto fiesta turbo forums you will see how badly the zetec s gets mocked, its awfull in performance, and the fiesta st has nothing on a few rs turbos out there....new fords just dont have the power they used to have, they have become gayerrer....when they got rid of the turbos there was no point in buy a performance ford, they were a waste of time, the escort GTi`s oh how rubbish they are

<SNIP - That's a bit too far, thankyou!>
