View Full Version : What would we be all driving if there was no such thing as a VR-4?

I'd probably still be driving my black facelift gdi wagon, or possibly a holden commodore v8 wagon.

ooh good choice, an RS6 or R34 GT-R would be my choice too, but they're too expensive!

The money i have spent on my VR4 in performance upgrades and fuel costs would have easily allowed me to afforded 1 or the other /yes

But 1 problem is :inquisiti

I would have been bored with them, unless i modded them /yes

I don't think it matters what car i own, if i can't play with modifications then i'm gonna get bored /rally

I'm about half way there to spending as much on my car as what would be needed to buy an RS6 or GT-R over here, but the next bit of money will either bring me a 2.8l fully forged engine or a 2.5l fully forged engine, both options will have a pair of gt2554r turbos and will be damned quick :D

I would have stuck with my GLS for a little longer, then probably had either a V6-24, or had another Honda Accord Coupe, or a Toyota Soarer GT-LTD.

In this order:

SAAB 9000 Aero with stage 3 tune and handling upgrade
Octavia RSi
Legacy GT-B
Volvo V70R preferably AWD
Volvo 855R
Impreza STi Wagon

Yes some of these may be considered sad but they are cheap and suitable for my requirements

I was looking at a gorgeous V6-24 before I decided I really had to have a VR4.

Right now if I didn't have the VR4 it would a company Toyota Prious with my old KTM Duke for raising the heart rate at the weekends.

I was looking at V70R and RS2's as alternatives to the VR4. The Volvo is still to expensive really, although it'll be a nice option in a couple of years. Huge amounts of 'scene tax' on the RS2.

The other 4wd 2.5 litre twin-turbo v6 wagon ... Nissan Stagea Axis

Or Toyota Caldina GT-T - even know there really is no comparison to a VR4

Probably would have considered a Legacy GT if the VR4 didn't exist, and would have regretted it when the transmission blew or the block cracked! Which reminds me I was in Wellington last week, nad was in a taxi on the wat to the airport during peak traffic when a Legacy RSK broke down on the access road to the Victora Tunnel...very funny everyone was on their horns and the poor bastard had no-where to go...luckily it was a two-lane road.

almost diffinately a toyota aristo (lexus gs 300) with the 3L twin turbo. cheap, stealth(no one has a fn clue what these are here..) and go like a bat out of a hell (in a straight line atleast).

or perhaps a more sedate car like a toyota carib blacktop or caldina GT-T

if i had more$ to play with a audi RS6

or i hate to say it, but a WRX sti /pan

changing car would be a decision needed very far away in future

Easy way to get to hell early if the second turbo kicks in as you are going round a bend/Devil5

Before I bought the VR-4 I really wanted an ATR, but I had also been looking at V70R's. I think i'd have probably bought the ATR, but saying that i'm glad I got the VR-4 out of my system.

I'm quite happy about the car situation i'm in now, of course that could all change if this 205 doesn't live up to expectations.

I know the 205 Mi-16s are fun even if my 405 version wa no slower. Without much tweaking they were fantastic and off the line the weight difference was very noticeable.

If I could find a 405 T16 in Germany then I'd snap it up without a thought.

Thanks for the kind advice David! The consumer websites do not share your dire warnings on Fords! Have a look at the Holden recalls! In saying that, I do not think Holdens are bad cars - they just do not stirr anything inside me. I grew up in the era of Ford Cosworth formula 1 engines, racing and rallying BDA Escorts ( I still get goosebumps when I hear a BDA on full song), GT40's, Cosworth , Cologne and V8 Capri Peranas. So I guess I am nostalgic when it comes to Fords but isn't that what being an enthusiast is all about? I have never owned a Ford (the closes being a Ford Courier diesel twincab 4x4 which was a Mazda as you know) but as a kid travelled many miles in the family Zephyrs, Cortinas, Escorts, Falcons and Holdens (they were sold as Chevs in SA) They all had their good and bad points! If you talk to a Holden mechanic he will tell you some horror stories about them too, and if he is unwilling I can tell you some!

and if i was to own a falcon it would be a typhoon

william
30-05-2007, 08:15 AM
LOL I know that and I am always quick to take the bait!! I like the Typhoon too (the one with the clutch upgrade!!) but it is a bit pricey at this stage.

I guess if we all had to buy sensible cars (cheap, reliable, economical) we would have been driving diesel Kia's or Daewoos - now that is scary stuff!

thats an inline 6 single turbo, but it is about as close as you're going to get to a VR-4, at least it is a 2.5l 6 cylinder :)

The interior looks terrible though!

william
30-05-2007, 09:32 AM
Still wrong then - the RS260 has the RB26 DET motor from the GTR which is a 2.6l. I agree about the interior and would add the ugly rear and boxy sides. That motor can make serious power though!

bradc

The M35 is a V6, they changed engines from the RB25 when they did the facelift. The interior (and exterior) is a lot better than those pics on the top moel (the axis).

The specs on that site say that it is a single turbo, but I think the V6 is twin turbo.

bradc

Might be right. It looks like I may have assumed it is a twin turbo because it is a V6. If it was twin turbo it would be VQ25DETT.

406Nm of torque a 3200rpm sounds good though.

If I hadn't come across the VR4 I would almost certainly have been driving a 3 litre facelift Sigma ......... I'd always liked the Sigma and had seen a pristine one a number of times at my daughter's school and had decided to hunt for a good one when I learned of a machine named a Galant VR4!

Previous cars of note that I've owned:

Jensen Healey (with 2 litre Lotus engine)

Ford Capri (3 litre)

Ford Sierra 4 x 4

Jaguar V12 E Type

All pretty lively cars with a penchant for letting the back end step out (except the Sierra). And none of them had a damn thingy called an ECU! :scholar:

Heck ....... I can't remember now. It was only the standard 4 x 4 and not one of the really fast RS or Cosworths. Fast enough though - and easy to outpace most other cars on the twisties due to the 4 wheel drive. I *think* mine was an early one 2.8 as I recollect most people had not seen nor heard of them and were impressed with the performance.
