Hi, new member, need a little assistance!

Purchased a 11996 White Galant GLS last April. It's now done 109,000 miles and goes rather well, however I have a little issue.

I noticed that when I bought it the engine revs were rather high. Put some fuel cleaner through the system and that doesn't appear to have fixed the problem.

Basically in 5th gear doing 60mph, my revs are between 4000 & 4500, when I believe they should be around the 2500 mark.

Anyone got any suggestions??

im assuming its a manual?
Revs do sound a bit high. Is the clutch slipping at all? If i was doing 4500rpm in mine (i know its a V6) i would expect to be doing close to 100mph. At 70mph i would guess im revving about 2700rpm.

I haven't driven a gls, so it's difficult for me to say, but I would agree with Monsieur LeBeazer. Those revs seem to be closer to 3rd than 5th. What revs gives what speeds in the other gears? If you press the loud pedal hard in 4th from 30 mph, do the revs rise proportionally to the speed, or is there any slippage?

70mph in mine is dead on 3000 revs in 5th

Could be a replacent gearbox from the wrong model ?

What speeds do you get at the red line in your gears ?

If the clutch isn't slipping, it could be that the diff has been replaced by one with the wrong ratio. I don't know what the final drive in a GLS is but, let's say it's around 3.7:1. If that were replaced by one that's nearer 5:1, you'd be running higher revs in each gear. On the plus side, though, you'd have better acceleration! :)

Is the RPM actually reading True ??

Are the revs artificially high in all gears ?

Does the car stop accelerating once it hits the Redline ? Or does it keep accelerating past it ?

Could be a faulty sensor ?

Thanks for the replies guys. The gears don't appear to be slipping.

Haven't tried red-lining it, but could give it a try! ;-)

Rev's do seem to be proportionate to the acceleration. One other thing I have noticed is that I can wheelspin the car in 2nd and sometimes in 3rd when I accelerate hard.

Whats your fuel economy like? - I would imagine 4500 revs at motorway speed would produce some pretty dire figures on a long run?
