Hey,

I've owned my '97 legnum vr4 for 2 months now and i it took it up the mt hutt access for the first time yesterday for the season opener :) i was impressed with the handling and gearing for both the accent and decent. Opted for 2nd/3rd going up and 1st/2nd going down - engine braking ftw! I was wondering wat kinda wear and tear i shud expect if i intend to use it 40~50 days this season. My mate mentioned i may have to replace the CVs in october as thats a known problem in subaru legacys ... Does that also apply to legnums?

I laughed when the road patrol wanted to verify my vehicle was 4wd, theyr rather strict on chain enforcement and 9/10 times 2wd have to fit them ;) occasionally 4wd has to follow suit but usually only after a big dump!

For the record, the mileage is 90,000km with all belts and water pump replaced recently - shes rather fresh :p

Cheers,

Seb

Hi! welcome to the club!
/Welcome2 /Welcome
the leggy is an awsome snow wagon can't wait to take her up again this year...

can't say i heard any bad things about cv joints. only thing i've heard is if you are going up and down the mountain in 1/2/3 you might want to consider an aftermarket transmission cooler. its fine if the traffic is moving faster than 20km or so, but if ur crawling along in a queue in a low gear for a long time the trans temp can climb pretty high and it puts stress on the torque converter too. applies for most auto-cars though... just consider changing your trans fluid a bit more regularly if you use it as a snow wagon ;-)

yeah cvs aint an issue....mitsis are tougher then soft subbies :p
i agree a trans cooler would be a good investment...
o yeah and welcome to the club :D

I wouldn't use 1st gear for engine braking at all, the trans will get particularly hot. Sounds like you've got a good car though, just be careful about the trans temps

i had my 25ST for 3 years fitted with a large transcooler,
drove it in trip mode all the time, engine braked, and in genral wasnt very nice to it,

still working perfectly to this day!
my girlfriend has it now,

and ive joined the world of manual vr4 ownership! :D

oh and welcome to the club!

Welcome and enjoy your toy, and bit of advice.
Don't fit Goodyear Eagle F1 D3's, best motorway tyre ever but no good in ice and snow.
I wouldn't use first for engine braking either, second and careful use of them big disks you got in each corner. Get good ceramic pads, little bit dearer but no fade and last yonks. Finally getting my old pads swapped in a weeks time.

Yea the eagles make me cringe. Ive currently got Dunlop Direzza DZ101 205/55R16 on all four ... Picked em up brand new, and already down to 5mm of tread lol. I was running em @ 36 psi, but now that ive blown the cob webs out i settle for a modest 32 psi for everyday usage :) ... Re engine braking, i use 2nd for the majority of the decent, but thru shady corner where it gets pretty gnarley 1st is mandatory -> look like ill need that trans cooler fitted sooner than planned eh?

never to much off-roading. I love gravel, but there arn't really any good safe gravel roads to drive in aucks.

Don't show that to Kieron, he'll have a conniption. /duh

I keep being tempted to chuck on the old 16"s with the blocky Dunlops on and have a blast somewhere. Think I'm gonna have to buy another 4G61 Mirage just for fun in the dirt. Mivec would be nice, turbs would be better. :evil2:

There ARE some 'safe' gravel roads around Aucks, depends on what you mean by 'safe' though. And what you mean by 'Auckland' as well.

Westbrook Road, off the old North Road Kumeu way through to Blackbridge, Dairy Flat comes to mind. About 18 km of excellent fine gravel, no drops and a couple of clever corners to play with.:smug:

Or the side road from Kaukapakapa to Puhoi although this has a few scary bits.:smartass2

Waikato to Te Akau down the coast ( WRC use it ), real limestone country with real rocks.:d

Gotta stop now, starting to drool and get itchy pedal feet./rally

For Tarseal fun the old North Road from 16 through to Helensville or the Road from Clevedon to Kaiua ( the fish and chip run ) or 16 through to Wellsford or ...

OK!! enough already ..../rally /rally /rally /rally
