Well 3 weeks into VR 4 ownership and my first problem appriciate some advise. I had what I thought was a wheel balance issue but even though I had a balance done I still have the problem. When driving the car at 60 + I am getting vibration through the steering wheel and through the car not aggresive but its getting worse. I was in France over the weekend and cruising at 80 on the autoroute was a pain. When you brake from those speeds it gets worse. However once under 60 alls fine. The tracking is spot on and the tyres and showing no signs of uneven wear.

My car is an auto VR 4 not the manual by the way. Any advise appreciated.

Check all the stuff that spins!

The heaviest spinning stuff is the wheels, so that has to be the first thing to check, even though you have had it checked already. Take it somewhere else. Also, stay there whilst they balance the wheels and ask them if the wheels are still round.

Next thing is do you get a vibration through the pedal all the way down to say 20-30 mph? If so, you may have a warped disc. Changing the discs is not so cheap, though!

After that it is checking drive shafts and cv joints, possibly even wheel bearings.

If I've left anything out, I'm sure others will be on to shout out!

Nicks covered most things :D

But 1 other to check is an "Out of Shape Tyre"

A wheel balancer will balance this out /yes but once at speed it will increse..

It's not possible to spot this when under the guard when being balanced..

If you can get the car up off all for wheels then start the car and let the wheels spin freely. Then look at the tyres from all angles when there spinning.. :)

Nick

I have got no vibration through the pedal below 60 mph all nice and smooth.

I have spoken to a mechanic friend and brother in law also a mechanic and though they dont know the specific car they are fairly certain if its not the tyres to be a drive shaft because it only appears at a certain speed and is a constant.

I had exactly the same problem. Couldnt work out where the vibration was coming from, but was only happening at speed. Then as it got worse, it was doing it under any type of acceleration.
Sounds very much like an inner cv giving up. Jack it up and check for torsional play in all of your driveshafts and that should shed some light on the matter

Thanks for all your help on this it has saved alot of messing around, the garage has just called me its the off side CV joint inner on the way out. There comment was that the the others are fine but this one is totally shot which they were quite surprised by.

Hmmm....... Guess what I have had over the weekend? Yep - a bit of a wobble whilst accelerating on to a dual carriageway off a roundabout. I am going to guess that I have the same problem on its way! What is the cost of a CV joint?

Yup I am suffering the exact same symptoms... from approx the same speed

The vibration is not too bad but I hear a loud resonant drone when even applying very very light gas when the car is coasting at that speed.

I hope it is driveshaft related and not rear diff!!!!

I did plan to swap CV joints as there is a good chance that the evo rear complete shaft has the same joints as the leggie/galant.

I am also getting a rhythmic knocking from rear, which increases in frequency as the car gets to about 20 mph, only on right hand lock when moving off from rest. Fingers crossed its the same issue altho I have read that the inside shaft / joint (depending on either left or right turn) is under heavy loading in these situations.

How much did the garage charge you for the new CV joints out of interest?

CV joints for me too. Offside front, I am wondering if that pothole may have sped up the damage that normal wear and tear had caused.

So how much for WRD to fix? :D

Mitsu-twitty will sell you two repair kits - option one is a new boot, clips, grease and such and cost me £50.

Option two is the kit that includes a new scalloped green casing, spider joint and also the contents of the Option one kit. Sounds like you need option two. If I remember correctly, this kit was close to £200?.....:inquisiti

Yep mine was the very same, o/s/f inner joint totally knackered, but every other shaft is absolutely fine, and they have been given some abuse. It does seem strange, but just one of those things.

I will be extremely gutted if you can get a cv joint kit from mitsubishi, as matey that i spoke to made me buy a shaft!

Update:

Spoke to bloke running company that supplys all driveshafts and joints. He's on the case, and i have told him that sourcing joints and shafts for our cars could be very lucrative for his company.. He is going to produce a list of all driveshafts and joints that he is able to supply for our cars. He is at the moment in discussion with several manufactureres in Japan. Will update as soon as i here more ..

There was another post somewhere? I've lost it? There was your fish bait comment, then someone else (Wildcards?) with a comment about keeping us hanging on a thread? But that post has disappeared??

Or maybe I am going mad.

Hi guys,
I just found this thread....same problem here which was driving me nuts.

Had horrific wobble when accelerating and even worse under braking. Cv's changed and like a new car although there is still a slight shudder when accelerating in range of 55 - 65 mph. Any ideas are welcomed... drive shaft ? steering rack ?

FYI ... All wheels balanced, tracking done, discs ok and wheels/ tyres round...

Cheers

did you replace outer joints or inners as well? On mine i had major vibration do to the inner joint being fubar'd

Hmmn, I have recently experienced a vibration when accelerating slowly from stationary. It would begin as a slight wobble/vibration at about 1400 rpm that I can feel in the whole car (not just the steering wheel) and if i then accelrate slowly the wobble becomes much worse - almost a knocking - at about 1800 rpm. If I accelerate hard through the region it goes away which got me thinking it miight be something out of balance on the driveshaft/slushbox. It is also intermittent - I parked it up for a week at the airport whilst offshore and was fine when I got back. At first I thought it was just in 1st gear (if I forced it to 2nd whilst stationary I could start from stationary without the vibration) ....but now it's happening occasionally in 3rd too.

Does this sound like CV joints or something in the autobox / drive shafts?

I think I've got a similar thing...but it's not a knocking or wobble as such...I think my wheels may need balanced as there is a wee wobble on the steering wheel at about 60+, but I do also suffer a serious knocking noise when pulling away or going over sleeping policeman...front end seems to shudder/knock...wondering if it could be the CV joints? And if not what?

Sorry slightly off topic.

Hello all: did the cheaper CV joints thing ever get anywhere? Obviously if I can support a specialist and save a few bucks at the same time I'd be dead keen: Mine has just started doing the wobbly joggly rumble rumble at higher speeds, so it's obviously time to replace.

Nick Mann

I have just swapped a second hand one on to mine which has nearly solved the problem. Definitely the inner (Green) joint is the problem.

I will be buying a pair of them when a good deal is found, so please all keep updating the site with finds!

This thread has me wondering if its the same problem I have. At 100mph+ the front wobbles a fair bit (not had tracking checked yet) and at around 45mph i get a drone unless I apply a little right foot.
It's not a bother for now as I just apply right foot until the wobbling stops and/or the noise goes away.

Forgot to close out my findings on this - for me it turned out my propshaft was bust:

Lee - my wobble was under medium to hard acceleration - not at a certain speed.

Nick, thanks for the info, I get nothing but seat of your pants acceleration /rally

Mine seems to be above certain speeds (85mpg starts to shudder and drone and is overall bad) whilst accelerating hard will cause a drone.
