View Full Version : pain in the a$!e flywheel bolts

Dont know if anyone remembers when i first got my car, it was knocking from the gearbox, i found it to be the bolts which attach the flywheel to the torque converter, well i currently have to retighten these bolts at least once a fortnight or i have to drive around with my car sounding like the bottom end is going to fall out.

I was wondering if it would be safe to spot weld each bolt just to keep them secure (ive used all the lock tight in leicester i think!) My biggest worry is spiking the ecu (is this possible) and would 4 spot welds throw the flywheel of balance?

Its doing my nut in now, please help!! :iloveyou:

Cheers

Hmm I would not recomend welding the bolts in place as it would unbalance things

any ideas? how secure would hellicoiling be on a flywheel? as it been sugested. Has anyone else ever had this fault. i cant understand it, it normally starts to rattle after ive had a play in manual mode. The bolts spin clockwise just like the fly, shouldn't this mean that the bolts get tighter not looser. aarrghhhh.

Somethings not right. The heads of the bolts should be very shallow. If they are tight, they shouldn't become loose IMO.

Doesn't sound right , what torque are you doing the fly bolts upto

are they the correct bolts the ones i remember are very flat and loot like they have a cross head ( two slots like a screw head )

Maybe some new bolt may grip better ????

i havent actually torqued them up as its a pain with a 3/8 ratchet and my torque wrench is a big'un, I know im naughty not doing this but they are done up FT. the first bolt i took out when it first started knocking took the thread out with it so ive had to re-tap it and put a bigger bolt in (same head size). I really dont want to cut corners but due to being made redundent i havent had the cash to splash. Im (sadly) trying to find a tempory fix until i can afford to have it done properly even if it means a new flywheel. I feel bad now :(

Threadlock of some sort perhaps?

threadlock just doesnt seem to cut it.

It sounds like things are already imbalanced by having an oversized bolt in there and that may be why they are shaking loose ...

Sounds like the best option is a new flywheel ... isn't it ? ?

Perhaps a second hand one from Mo ... :inquisiti

how much would i be looking at for a new fly then

There are a couple here ... http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m22b0s1401p0

But you may be able to get a second hand one from Mo. Not sure whether that is a good idea or not though ...

Err... I hate to sound negative, but the auto torque converter includes the flywheel. The bolts go through a four pronged contraption which is attached to the engine but the toothed starter ring is part of the t/c. The problem is that those threads are part of the t/c, so you can't replace the 'flywheel' AFAIK. You have to replace the whole t/c.

there was a cheap torque convertor on ebay, its been round a couple of times as no one has bought it, it may be worth swapping yours out.

Take each bolt out in turn and drill the head to take wire lock. If there is no were to run the wire on the plate drill 2 small 1/32 -1/16 holes and use them This might do the trick but the bottom line is it sounds like something is wrong.

What do you mean it sounds like somethings wrong? It had a new fly and torque converter only 6000 miles/18 months ago at exteme. There isnt any vibration at idle or through the rev range, it actually stops knocking when you go over 2000rpm. Its going into a friends garage on tuesday hes a really good engineer to so im hoping he comes up with a good idea.

I think what don means there must be something wrong for the bolts to keep on coming undone, IE bolts not done up properly or the threads are buggered in some way.

Asked in a diff thread but this is probably the right place, did you manage to fix the problem?

mine has had this problem too.. well sort of anyway, it's the first time they have come undone, i hope they dont keep doing it!

Once mine were tightened properly it never happened again.

Let us know if you do have the problem again, maybe there is a way of stopping it, or a reason that they come loose?

Would a bit of threadlock help?

i'm going to try some thread lock on them.

i've done 99% of the gearbox removal (just waiting for my old man to help me actually remove it from the car) so i can do the TC seal, and i'll chuck a bit of thread lock on those bolts!
