I've got a 96 pre facelift legnum I've just taken off some 17 x 8 wheels (38) offset with 235/45/17 tyres on because they were rubbing on the rear arches when cornering.

What i want to know is if i buy some new wheels that are 17 x 7 would I be able to re-fit these tyres and would the risk of rubbing be less or more? Also what is the best offset to go for with 7 or 7.5 inch wheels at the moment the wheels stick out slightly thus causing the rubbing they seem about right on the inside clearance.

Sorry for another tyre question.

Cheers.

Just been doing some work on figuring out tyre sizes myself, and wouldn't recommend fitting 235/45s on a 7" rim.

The optimum width for a 7" rim seems to be between 205 and 215, so fitting a 235 would probably give you a very squirmy ride.

See this article for some good info on what will fit what: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html

I'm sure I've read about people using 8" rims before, even 9", so maybe you could get some 8" wheels with a different offset if they're protruding, or just get the guards rolled?

As far as i remember the evo enkies are 8" and fit just fine. How low is your car? I would have had issues with rear tyres rubbing if i'd kept it as low as it was.

Evo enkies are right on the limit. They are 8" wide with a 38 offset, so I guess that is what you are talking about.

A 225 wide tyre will almost certainly fit with no rubbing, or a different design of 235 tyre could help. For example, I have had 235/45 Falkens on Evo 7 rims and only had VERY minor rubbing issues. I know someone who has had 235/45 Eagle F1s on Evo 8 rims and had much more rubbing than me.

Yeah, im running 225's, so that will explain the lack of rubbage

My car is standard suspension wise.

What size 225/? tyres should i run I thought the tyre size should be 215/45 but i'd rather run 225's if that's possible?

So it seems my problems are trye based not wheel based? But would 235 tyres rub less on a 7 inch wide rim then on and 8 inch wdie rim?

Thanks.

225/45's on EVO wheels won't rub much at all, but because you've already got the tyres, the best thing to do is to just roll the guards a bit, then your rubbing problems will go away.

235's will rub the same amount on a 7, 7.5, 8 or 8.5" rim. If the offset on all the rims is the same that is. You can't really go above an offset of 38 anyway, you'll hit the rear suspension arm.

Just get the guards rolled, it's easiest!

I would personally look at getting the guards rolled too. But if you don't want to do that, put 225/45/17 tyres on. That will almost certainly stop the rubbing. The rubbing is the tyre on the wheel arch, not the wheel. Changing the wheel size won't matter if the tyre width is the same and in the same place (same offset).
