A 1996 model will be a Type-S. The Type-V was released in 1998 when Mitsubishi facelifted the car.
To confirm this, check your rev counter. It has three AYC lights, hasn't it?

is it auto, with tiptronic box ?? traction control ?? if it is, then It's a type S
