Has this ever been done? Friend of mine has been offered a very cheap GTO engine that needs a TINY bit of work, and always wondered why MITSI didnt just stick that engine in the VR4.

engine is wrong way round , and would not fit without quite a bit of metal work changes

yeah for some reason misti couldnt work out which way they wanted there engine! even the 7g galant has the engine around the other way

in the GTO the engine is mounted opposite to in the Galant. air filter is on drivers side in GTO, passenger side in the galant.
so all engine mounts would be on different sides hence lots of fabrication

i dont see any reason why it cant be done thow

The cost of fitting the engine , fabricating all the bits , changing the transfer box , prop shaft , all the electrics , all the changes to the engine bay to get the bugger in , the whole you need to make into the cabin so the rear turbo could fit - I recon you would be talking close to 8k just for that lot to be done by a professional company in a safe manor .

How much extra do you think the standard gto engine would give when they max out around 350 bhp without spending big money . Not worth the effort I'd rather push my VR4 to 350 on a standard engine or spend the money and go forged for less than 8k

So yes Pit boy is correct it can be done , but is it worth I think not

So

Doesnt the GTO engine (6A72?) rotate the opposite way also? Still 5 reverse gears and 1 forward gear would be interesting!!! /pan
Like anything, it is techincally possible, but there is a hell of a lot of work to do it.
IIRC someone out there has dropped (i use the term loosely!) a skyline engine and drivetrain into a VR4, so anything is possible given the will and a bottomless pit of money!
Why not buy a GTO and be done with it?

would be a damn site cheaper to go dropped forged bigger turbos on the VR4 or just buy a GTO lol

i see. so yes obviously you are right, big waste of money.

got offered the engine, fancied a project. thats all it was.

Ripping out a twin turbo V6 and replacing it with a slightly bigger twin turbo V6 seems like a lot of trouble, but if you want a massive project, go for it! Personally, I would think a project that difficult would be better it the car it was going into was substantially slower to begin with. Say a pick-up truck or a Mini?

Either way - don't let us put you off, No-one who owns a VR4 can preach to you about sensibilities!!

Nick has hit on a good point

vr4 does not equal seinsible

:D

as Nick said don't let me put you off , just wanted to make sure you really understood the basic's of the problems . Why not get a mini and fit the GTO engine in the rear of that /lol

Or a Colt, now that would be interesting.

Nah no one in their right mind would own a 205 and leave sitting on the drive doing nothing :p

Who said it's on my drive? and who said it's doing nothing? /secret :lipseal

HR-V would be good, but at leats with the Colt you keep it in the Mitsubishi family.

The GTO lump makes 280bhp std, so for a load more weight you get no more power. You can get a load of goodies for them, but making the motor powerful is still complex. The engine rotates the same way, but it is the opposite way round so a swap would need the GTO's gearbox, transferbox and diff.

The fuel system is smaller than the VR4's so to get decent gains you need a chunky investment in that first too.

Now here i do have an evo engine and a colt though........

Cheers,

Ben.

fix the gto engine and sell it, and use the money to buy 6a13 tt bits!
