Re-mapping ECU

Is it possible to custom remap our ECU's?
Or does it have to be new stand alone unit? If so, what do you thing about something like this:

Can you recommend any other unit?

Apparently our ECUs can be re-flashed. But I don't know of anyone in the UK who has done it successfully. In the UK, people have piggy backs including (But probably not limited to):

Dastek Unichip
GReddy E-Manage (Blue and Ultimate)
MAP ECU (1 and 2)
