I remember seeing a video of a coin standing up on a running V12 many years ago now, but I believe the coin used was a US Quarter. Anyway, the $NZ2 is a fairly wide coin, I bet you couldn't do it with a 50 cent piece! :p

i did this on a 525 tdi lump just to see if it was myth or bollox. i was very impressed with how long it stood up for, and it was only the aircon kicking in that spoilt the party

I used a $2 coin just because I had one. I don't think any of the new 10c to 50c coins would work.

I wonder if this will work on a Jaguar V12? My uncle has an XJS V12 coupe, I shall have to try that on his car at some stage.

all V12's are perfectly balanced, hence the coin thing should work on any V12

In theroy yes, but couldn't a poorly designed or maintained V12 have timing that was off a bit and hence might actually not be perfectly balanced?

yes, such as a Jag V12, or anything else made in england :)

why wouldn't this work on any engine?
bradc

because most engines aren't balanced at all and they will vibrate all over the place.
have a look around for primary and secondary balance. autozine and wikipedia both have good articles on the subject
I will point out though that this trick works on Lexus V8s - which as you know it should not with a V8, but that's how smooth they are...

right thats it, mods ban the heathen infedel now, i'll have you know the beautiful v12 jag lump was the first engine to take me over 150 on 4 wheels, and it was as smooth at those speeds as it was at 30, awesome awesome car except for the electrics and the build qaulity and the fuel comsumption

yeah but at least it is going to work, and look/sound awesome :D
Was able to do this with a U.S. $0.50 cent piece in the early 1960s on the
tank of a BMW 590 cc motorcycle. That world renown German engineering at
it's best.
