First things first....

get some AMSoil and do a full gearbox flush (takes about 15 litres). This stuff is highly recommended by club members.

Details on how to flush is in the members section.

This can resolve several gearbox issues.

If not try contacting Zedy1 (Mo from this forum) Galant Spares for a second hand box.

Best of luck.

Hi.

I did exactly the same thing to mine, cooked it! I tracked it down to abad coupling of the fluid hoses where it goes into the radiator. There was two cheap**** joiners joining the hose, they melted closed when hot and touching intercooler pipes.

I would be very interested to see if your wagon has the same joiners???? I blamed the mechanic but I'm not that sure!

Your box is cooked my friend. Have a look around up there for a 'w5a51' triptronic trans-Invecs II mitsi use's them in more than one vehicle, not just the vr4 I think some pajeros have them.

W5a51 triptronic!

Once you get the new one make sure you get an after market trans cooler! That will avoid this problem in the future, they are not that expensive to fit but will cool the trans far more efficiantly. You should be able to ring the snot out of it with a decent cooler.

As said, use TAR's directions in the previous post to get a spare box.

Or contact the people who are currently breaking cars.

Also as said, the box will take a good thraping if the fluid is cooled a bit better. It will also take a lot more abuse if the correct oil is in there in the first place. Most on here who have used it recommend Amsoil - it is the only non-mitsy fluid that hits the requirements of their diamond 3 spec, and it copes with the heat in the box better too.

It may be worth trying a full Amsoil flush first. It's a lot of money to waste on oil if it doesn't work, but it's a lot of money to save on fitting a new box if it does!!

thanks guys much appreacited mechanic suggested this morning doing a flush and fill with an oil that almost fills all the specs and see if it works first. then if i want to preserve it buy the ams other wise will be 160 pound down the drain if it dose not sort the problem. i see his point but also if it is to work with just oil has to be ams works around dammage right.

There is no reason to waste the expensive oil. After flushing, the oil will be nice and clean. If it doesn't fix the problem, drain it and keep it for your next box.

Why not try an independent 4x4 specialist.

Might be a better option than dealing with a /Elmo (where is the Muppet smilie gone?)

I honestly dont think you should waste any more money on flushing! If it's craped out due to overheating, then it'll be because everything has fused to gether! flushing wont help.

Thats why your car wants to go foward in reverse, because it's melted into gear!

Get a new box or get yours reco'd. Even if by some miracle yours goes again, it wont last long! Don't mean to dash your hopes, just being real!

you may be right i may be crazy and denile is not just a place in egypt. the oil arrives tomorrow my fingers will be crossed but i do expect to be buying a box. iv abused all my galants in one form or another and they worked again when people told me they would not. there tough one of the manny reasons i love em

I really wish you luck but I don't think any mineral ATF will help you. They just don't have the cleaning agents in them like synthetics. If bits come out of the sump when the oil is drained then that is likely to be that, no oil is a mechanic in a tin (Amtech did you say?) If what comes out is just black and stinks then do get the new fluid put in and see what happens, if its a bit better but still not right then dump it and put in some amsoil. Some Honda dealers have do this to stop warranty claims. Its not just a short term fix either.... Fingers crossed

My machine did exactly the same thing. It wants to go foward in park and reverse. it doesn't seem to select gear but when I put it in drive it goes. first and second are stuffed as well as reverse, it'll select between third fourth and fifth for a while before limp mode kicks in. The trans reco guys over here told me that this is typical of overheating, some of the parts are literally fused to gether, welded!

They have to break the trans open to replace the parts so while they are in there they might as well replace all the other what nots while they're in it. Price dif is neglegable. It's a big job to split one of these trans open and rebuild. Costs in our dollar runs up around 2K

Worth it if your going to keep it for a while, but a second hand one could be just as good or not? Thats the gambit.

Look foward to hearing how it goes!!! I guess it's worth a crack.

Hey that sucks! We got heaps of guys down here that rebuild the w5a51! Whats happening up there?

Wondering out loud how much it would cost to ship one up there. I just brought a 97 reco'd trans for $620 nzd which is like 200 pound so that's like a hand full of euros isn't it? might work out in your favour if you did some home work on shipping options from NZ !! I'm sure there are plenty of members willing to help out. I've seen two good transmissions in the last week going for around $500 nzd.

Just a thought
