Ok, so the car is in hospital at the moment.

I really want to keep it and hoping thats the way it will be.

But pressure is being applied at the moment by /Handbag .

She would like me to get something like:
http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=794541 /pan
or
http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=455126 /pan

But I would prefer something like:
http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=735156 :pimp2:
or
http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carid=773896 :pimp2:

I really don't think I could live with a 4 pot again./Grrr

So any ideas or sensible solutions.

The BMW makes the VR4 look VERY cheap to run, and fairly reliable - my dad's E38 740iL has had a lot of expensive work required. I don't know what insurance is like in ireland, but in the UK the A8s were group 20 (except the FWD 2.8) because of the cost of repairing the aluminium bodywork.

What about a Subaru Legacy with the flat-6 engine? Otherwise E39 BMW 5 series with the 2.5 (523i, 525i) or 3.0 inline 6s? Audis are horrible to drive (I much prefer my plain galant to both the A4s (X reg and 54reg) that I've driven). Jag X type 3.0?

BMW E39 530d. And if that's not grunty enough, chip it. Almost as much pace as a standard VR-4 and 30+mpg combined. No 4WD mind.

The E39's are good cars, that 750iL does look a little bit expensive, if it was 10k I think it would be a good deal.

How about a Ford Mondeo, ST220 model perhaps. A V6 with a decent amount of poke.

I remember when these came out, I was getting something from a petrol station in Johannesburg when one of these pulled in... I politely asked the driver if he wouldn't mind giving it some stick on the way out.

He looked at me and said that he would, then hesitated and asked me why. I told him that I was keen to see what a turbo charged six cylinder diesel could do.

He gets in, keys ignition and then revs it, reverses it and swings it 180 degrees in the forecourt, then checks the road for oncoming traffic before turning right and lighting up the back tyres up the road and off into the night.

I was suitably impressed.
