View Full Version : Fastest recorded speed?

Ryan

OK, there are some fast VR-4's owned by various people on this site. Unfortunately my humble white PFL is not one of them.

I would be interested to see what maximum recorded speed everyone's done - don't have to post proof or anything, I'm just curious to see how fast these cars *can* go.

Absolutely no idea. Never had enough tarmac and the right surroundings to have a go.

I know that when it changes from 4th to 5th (at about 130mph) the acceleration slows down. I guess you would need a fair distance after that to get to 160/170.

My speedo only reads up to 180km/h and I've gone a fair bit past that. I'd guess at least around 200km/h at the end of 4th gear, probably getting an Apexi RSM soon for more accurate speeds.

So I'm guessing by WODJNO's and Rikkis's posts some VR4's have speedos that read up to 280?

theres been alot of talk of this sort of thing before (track day). in the end people were still in the process of modding thier cars, some couldnt come cos of work and family commitments and finacial issues etc etc..

think there was a few people wanting to just turn up and watch.
think if i remember correctly, people running down the track had to have helment, fireproof suit? and fire extinguisher... and current WOF?

Rich - that warning light that is there, is that not the seatbelt light???

A stock manual will get to 230kmh in 5th at 6000rpm, and 268kmh at 7000rpm. A stock auto car will get to 267kmh at 6000rpm and 312kmh at 7000rpm. Considering how small our turbos are and that the max power is always around 5500-6000rpm, the auto's will be faster at the top end.

Several months ago on the Autobahn I hit just over 250kph. The car (engine) was nowhere near finished at that speed, but I sure was! On the GPS it was just a few kph slower (246kph if I remember correct). Few weeks later the misses hit 240kph with me as a passenger, and I must say, that felt actually just a bit more comfortable than me behind the wheel! I'd recon it can get up to 280/285kph max but I don't think I've got the balls for that.

My tires are Toyo PROXES T1-R 225/45 ZR17 so that shouldn't be a limit, but as much as I like to go fast, THAT fast is just... adrenalin-fast. I'm sure there are cars which drive up to 300kmh at which 250kmh still feels comfy and safe, but in my car the wind noise, the harsh -lowered- suspension make sure you know, hear and feel that you're going fast.

Okay, so who's next!?

I have had 147 in 5th at about 5500 engine had run out of puff at this point (no more ooumph!). speed climing very slowly at that point and it was and auto box.
as stated above all carried out on a private test track/runway.
stock car no mods for perfomance.
however i do think the speed reads progressivly higher than it should be as the actual speed increases.
before i disabled the speed limiter the speedo would read 120mph but we all know it is supposed to limit to 112mph.
tyre were up to job and freshly balanced.
i love runways, no other cars and only yourself to blame if your engine goes bang.

I thought that people who had disassembled the factory ecu said the speed cut was at 195kph, rather than the quoted 180. If so, the speed cut is at just over 120mph.

Although even if that is the case, the ecu and speedo only know how fast the wheels are turning, so assuming you are running stock tyres and there is some safety margin built in to the speedo reading, your actual speed should always be a %age less than the speedo reading.

In factory auto spec 0.55-0.65 bar I would expect to get about 150 mph indicated on speedo in 5th @ 5500 rpm at which point the turbos can't supply enough air to go any quicker.
Not that I would do that, I just know this is what happens.
