well due to recent issues with my gearbox/clutch,
the gearbox wass taken out today...

initial thoughts was that the clutch release bearing had failed,

this was not the case...

when the fluid was droped from the gear box, metal came out!
BIG BITS!!!

turns out the input shaft bearing had failed...
and the input shaft oil seal was also worse for where.

luckily theres no damge to the box or gears,

anyway, part number on a couple of parts if anyone need to change
these are the numbers on the parts which appear to be standard items.....

input shaft bearing - NTN 6306V23
input shaft oil seal - NOK BH5066E

heres some photos of the days work, and damage

BIG UPS TO MIKE FOR DOING 99% OF THE WORK!
COULDNT HAVE DONE WITHOUT YOU!! :iloveyou:

**** man, you weren't kidding about them being big bits of metal either. Good job on sorting it though.

I wouldn't even know where to start! Hopefully it all comes back together well and it's good to know those BIG SOD-OFF BITS haven't interfered with the rest of the gearbox!

Crikey, looks like a busy day there! Good job on spotting the parts - So as they're non-mitsubishi specific parts, I presume that means sourcing spares is easier?

looks like you were lucky not to get the metal caught in the gears etc... sweet that got it sorted though :)

did you end up replacing the clutch at the same time?

Now I think about it, wasn't the clutch supposed to have been replaced not long before you got the car? perhaps they damaged the bearing during that

I would be interested in attending some DIY sessions at some point. Not that I'd be able to do anything much more than passing tools or beers but I would like to learn more than anything else.

sorry guys keeping the crew to a minimun, theres just not enough space at my parents place... 3 people is the most that could work on the car at the same time anyways.

yes ken can be back home by 430 :D

me and mike are starting at 9am on sunday.

only took 3 1/2 hours to get it out, shouldnt be much more to get it back in.

had to order the input shaft oil seal from mitsi, as i couldnt find the right one anywhere else,

bought new oils for the gearbox/transfer/diff, 4L of Royal Rurple 75/90,
also got a new clutch release bearing, (not nessesary but i thought i may aswell)

How do you get along with putting the manual back in? I've found the auto is a real prick! have to get a lifter in this weekend to stick mine back in.

the manual is about 45-50kg, hence one person can carry it. The auto cars are specced about 40-50kg heavier, so as you can imagine they are a lot more difficult to carry and move around on your own!

Yeah, its a pain but hopefully all the messing around trying to do mine will make it easier this time. The thing i found was that the gearbox would hit the lower suspension arm mounting point if i tried to come in from the bottom, and hit the clutch cover. In the end, i took the splash guards off, and went up to the same height as the engine, then forward and on.

But yeah it should be much easier with three people versus me and a floor jack.. Plus kenneth has a fair bit of experience with it, so i might just watch his technique:scholar:

Id certainly hate to have a go with the auto, another reason why manual is the better car:P:afro:

run down of repair cost...

new bearing fitted, ($43 from saeco, could have gotten it way cheaper but i just wanted it done asap)

picked up now oil seal, ($19.10 from mitsi parts)

new clutch release bearing fitted ($37 from allstop)

Royal Purple Gear Box oil, 75/90 4L enough for gearbox transfer case and rear diff ($64 from STA www.staparts.co.nz)

help from friends priceless :D

assembled most of the gearbox today, only had a little time to work on it,
so all the gears/selectors are in the casing,

just need to bolt the clutch cover side on.
