hello people , put a post on the wrong topic instead of here . well i am looking to buy a VR-4 as soon as i get my MERCEDES C230 KOMPRESSOR sold , but in the meen time would like some info. , on the standard size of the brakes for the VR-4 and should i need to up-grade them please ?

Not sure on the standard size, but upgrading is considered a very good idea. Either upgrade the discs/pads keeping the calipers or go to 17" wheels which allows the clearance for one of the evo systems to be put on. If you are driving only on the road, the standard brakes are pretty much up to the job. If you drive hard then an upgrade is a good idea, and if you plan to do track days then go for 17"'s and bigger disks.

All the above applies to the front of the car - most people agree that the back is good enough.

i think the size for the discs are 294mm front
264mm rears

Standard front discs are vented 294mm with 2-pot sliding calipers, rears are vented 284mm with 1-pot sliding calipers. As others have said, depends how you drive. These are serious brakes and work well in normal driving conditions. If you like to press on a bit though, and specifically if you want to do track days, their performance starts to degrade as they get hotter. Upgrades aren't too dear though - anything from around £400 for discs and pads all round with standard calipers, through around £800 for second-hand Brembos (ex-Evo, 4-pot front, 2-pot rear) with discs (320mm front, 302mm rear) and pads, up to around £3,500  if you want to go for brand spanking AP Racing 6-pot fronts, 4-pot rears with 330mm/302mm discs.

Anything larger than the standard discs will require bigger wheels - any of the above will fit under 17" rims. If you go up to 350mm front discs, you'd need 18"s. If you go for the larger calipers, make sure the wheel offset will accommodate them.

thanks people , for the info it is all good what everyone has said , especially H7 . the added info of the approximate pricing for the necessary bits was a bonus as i was dredding the costs would be skyhigh .

Hi

I have been looking through the posts on brakes and just wondered whether anyone can answer me this.

I have a VR4 on a 'V' plate registered in 1999 and it is the saloon version.

I have just had my 54000 mile service and the motor requires new front discs and pads.

I want to buy replacements for the standard brakes, but uprated i.e. grooved or drilled and grooved.

I cannot find a supplier for the discs. The pads (ferrodo are the most mentioned) I am assuming I can get these from any supplier?

Does anyone know where I can buy what I want from and if so any idea on what I need to ask for???

Cheers

Mick
