Just got this email and thought it was a good idea to post it here...

PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. HISTORY HAS BEEN CHANGED BY THE ACTION OF INDIVIDUALS. PLEASE ACT AS OF T O D A Y.

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting 106.9 p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take a ggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by notpurchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!
Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..
THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE
RANGE
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.boycott BP and Esso

don't most of the other fuel garages that have been mentioned above to buy from, buy there fuel from either esso or BP? so all esso & BP have to do is put up the cost to them which in turn mean's they have to put up the price to us?

:inquisiti i don't see it working??

That's not a bad idea,

apart from we don't have any BP or ESSO stations round where i live so i wouldn't be changing anything.

But i like the idea.

nice one.

i have started to wonder who originally came up with the idea of not buying ESSO and BP. It might have been smeone from SHELL!

but i am game for forwarding it on.

Won't work... but I buy all my fuel from shell anyway.

But people aren't particularly bothered. I posted a way to save up to 5p/litre on shell fuel which everyone ignored.

I recently realised that V-Power petrol from Shell provides me with better mpg.
Am averaging now with my V6 31mpg, whereas in the past it was 28mpg. The only problem though is that there arent many Shell petrol stations around in Wales!

Do you have a link to the post you had on saving fuel cost from shell?

The problem with the Boycott, aside from the fact that BP/Esso re-sell to supermarkets etc anyway, is that it's not really the fuel companies fault.
Yes, they make some profit on pump prices, but most of what you're paying for fuel is in the tax.

Petrol stations often make more profit at the till from the shop than they do from the fuel: it's one of the reasons so many are open so late.
That's not to say there isn't any profit in the fuel either.....these companies didn't get rich from selling the daily news and a pint of milk. But the margins just aren't that huge.

Plastics and the Air industry are huge revenue streams, as is petrochemicals. I am led to believe the markup on diesel is actually higher than that on petrol because of it's commercial origins vs comparitive cheapness to refine.

For an idea of what you pay for at the pump, look at the price of "red" diesel versus "pump" diesel.

In fact, the BBC did a fair piece on this back in 2001:

If the majority of what we pay for petrol is tax, why cant the goverment lower the tax duty on petrol?

This really has nothing to do with petrol, its spam email designed to lock up email servers.

Don't bother passing it on.

Government CAN reduce duty on fuel. They just don't want to. It brings in a lot of revenue (which they say is all used looking after the roads....but I'm not seeing much evidence of that) and of course they need to balance the books, so if it comes off fuel, they will have to hurt us somewhere else. Vehicle duty? Council tax? Maybe. But motorists are a rich old bunch (hey cars are expensive anyway, right?) so why not ask us to pay more for the privilege.
