Right, either I've been on a dodgy website or my nephew has managed to get something downloaded on the machine whilst he has been searching for free flash games to play...anyway, I'm running Adaware and that isn't shifting the problem.

If I try to type an address and I get it wrong, rather than page not found popping up, it seems to redirect me to a random porn site...no matter what address I try, assuming it isn't a valid website, it comes up with dodgy content...I can't work out what has happened or where it has come from...but I'm wanting rid of it...any suggestions?

Cheers.

I'd try running spybot search and destroy, it can sometimes nuke things that adaware misses.

go Start -> Run -> "msconfig" -> Startup Tab. Have a look there for anything suspect and tidy it up anyway. If you don't already know that is where you can find programs that start parts of themselves as windows boots.

Also it could be something that is a small program which might be able to be detected in Control Panel -> add/remove programs. Of course if you have a shop bought computer with a lot of preloaded programs this might be hard to distinguish between junk and stuff you DO want.

hijackthis is also good.

If I had to guess I would say something is in your hosts file, however I wouldn't really recommend playing around in there if you don't know what you're doing!

I had a porn site open up once and each time I closed it another porn page opened. I was there or about 30 mins trying to close them. In the end I took my puter to my puter expert and he sorted it

prolly easiest way is this way... restore it to about a week or 2 before it started happening. then yeah, install any of those programs suggested above.

but yeah? maybe set him up with his own account (login) next time so he doesnt mess round with the main account (login). I use this for my son. But have restricted his account to no internet via mcafee.

I'm not entirely sure it was the nephew...I frequent the darker side of the web a wee bit (not just porn! I mean not porn!)...so I've possibly picked it up myself...just don't recall anything unexpected happening...

IF your still having problems and as you mentioned in Chat you disabled System restore /Grrr

You could try searching in Reg edit if your ok doing that but if you mess it big problems could happen

Or delete your browser everything and reinstall again or move to a different browser Firefox is Good

A lot of these hijacks are very subtle you dont see anything wrong until it happens

It is breaking on Internut Exploder and firefox...I've got my hands on Spybot now and it seems to be working - it's scanning the system just now so hopefully that will catch the problem...

Thanks.

Oh god no, not scoobynet!

LOL...no, I used to do a lot of web development stuff - back end programming, web sites and the like...the darker side of the web was always good for getting the latest news on technologies and stuff as it was generally being used by them - according to some reports, next to warfare, the porn industry is the biggest driver for technology advancements - I'd personally go as far as suggesting the porn industry is the biggest mover for online applications of technology...however, warfare and porn are only 2 of the darker flavours and 2 that I don't frequent...however, the sites I do go back to look at don't really care what they show/advertise so I suspect it's been picked up and done whilst dipping my toes back in that field...serves me right for letting my guard down!

I'll add Scoobynet to the list of sites to check on dark cold nights...
