I've seen vista on about 50 machines, and the only conclusion I've come to is that in order for it to run correctly you need 4 rather powerful/quick parts.
Core 2 Duo - at least 2ghz
2gb ram, preferably 4gb
10000rpm hard drive
nvidia 8600 series graphics card or higher
It runs like a piece of crap on anything else. The only machine that I've been happy with it's performance on is my home machine which just happens to have a Core 2 Extreme QX6800 at 3.5ghz, 4gb ddr2-800 ram, 2x 15k SAS drives in Raid 0 and a pair of 8600GS's in SLI, and on that Vista isn't a bad OS at all. But on anything less grunty, it's kind of crap

I agree, I got my youngest a celeron laptop last year with Vista....... now with XP much better.
that's why I'm still running XP on all my computers.

What is more to the point is that XP doesn't have all the DRM (Digital Rights Management) stuff. Very good reason for me to avoid Vista at all cost.

Funny, I run Vista 64 Ultimate and find it awesomely fast, compared to the previous XP install I had on my computer.
Of course I have 4gigs of ram, Quad Core, and a mega duper video card.
I think if you want an O/S that takes advantage of expensive HW vista is it, otherwise staying with XP is probably better.

Matson, yeah if you throw a lot of hardware at it you will get good results :)

Nope, I can't stand the noise and raids always seem to die on me.
I have a Raptor 150gig atm, but am craving me some SSD's.
I do have a 30" Widescreen LCD, and water cooling though :)
Heh, pissing contest over computer bits... It's amazing I can run a VR4 and a computer at the same time.

Water cooling? That always strikes me as just a bit risky......

I don't think it'll pop the way it's set up. And anyway if it does, it's just an opportunity to upgrade. Just like when something dies in the car.

I actually find them very quiet when they are just sitting there, but if I'm trashing them, they sound like old Quantum Bigfoots or other old Quantum drives crossed with a 5.25" floppy, you can hear them from quite some distance away :)
I do prefer my raptor though, much much quieter.
