Hi

I've got a slight problem with the auto box in my 98 2.5 v6, it wont move the bloody car. I was doing about 80 down the motorway when i felt an almighty thud and lost all drive.
ive heard of some common fault to do with the tourque converter or sumin, just wan to know if this is the most likely problem and weather or not if its going to break the bank.
many thanks.

it will possibly be the torque converter splines, but whatever it is, be assured it will be expensive!

Yep, sounds like you've had exactly that fault. Very common I'm afraid.

Best bet - Contact these guys, and ask them where your nearest approved repair centre is:

http://www.jpat.co.uk/

Reason I say to contact them is that they know the fault well, and also the knock on effects. Normally it's the T/C splines that shear (hence the sudden BANG and loss of drive), but quite often it damages the input shaft splines too - they fatigue and end up a little undersize according to Jpat. Net result being that if someone just changes the T/C, the problem soon happens again. Jpat have sourced/manufacturered upgraded parts to cure this.

I think you're looking at about £500-800, maybe more depending on location to get it done.

If you put it in drive and rev it, what happens? What does the dashboard tell you it thinks is happening?

If your speed rises on the dash and the car goes through the gears, it will be your output shaft.

If it doesn't, then it will be earlier in the transmission, so most likely the TC.

I had the same problem before my rebuild (which was very expensive)... especially on downhills. AT would shift and then *BANG* and flashing "N"

Not sure what prices are like the in the UK but it cost me NZ$3586 or GBP 1431 to have my AT rebuilt. It was well worth it though as now it feels like new - plus it is covered by a warranty.

Ive just heard back from an auto box specialist, and they recon its the T/C splines too, they've told me its gona be about 550 pounds to get right so im going to go for it, its the best ive heard all week.
Will keep you posted.

That doesn't sound bad - Make sure they change the T/C input shaft too though!
