lol - you need to start adding "IMHO" to some of your posts Brad.

which you arnt very often, and diffinately not now,
anyway keep it on topic.

I am almost tempted. Are they the lightweight wheels ?

I quite like the style too!

bradc
14-04-2008, 08:17 PM
They are about 21.3lbs - 9.6kg which is very light for an 18x8" wheel. In fact that is lighter than EVO 7 17x8 wheels!

Be warned, you do need the 3mm spacer at the front. They have about a single sheet of paper clearance between the spoke and brembo's.

Gly
14-04-2008, 08:20 PM
thats no issues for richard as he dosent have brembos.

there probabilly the lightest 18s you'll find without going forged

KiwiTT
15-04-2008, 08:38 PM
Would I need to do any body work to make them fit. i.e. rolling the arches etc.

KiwiTT
15-04-2008, 08:58 PM
If I do, who would want my alloys ?

bradc
15-04-2008, 09:42 PM
you might need to roll the rear arches, but I'm sure Carsten can help you with that

Kenneth

track day wheels.

KiwiTT

hmmm ... seriously tempted now.

Andy mentioned that the GSD3 weren't as good anymore because they are made in China now for NZ. So will I need other tyres ?

18x8 - what size tyres. Using this (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) I should go 235/40 R18's

Gly
16-04-2008, 07:02 AM
i use 225/40s

i think the 235 would give rubbing probs, and be very close to suspension components

KiwiTT
16-04-2008, 07:46 AM
Now to price some 225/40 R18 includding fitting and balancing.

Gly
16-04-2008, 07:55 AM
sweet,

bradc
16-04-2008, 08:02 AM
225/40/18's are probably the best option. 235/35/18 is smaller than stock (diameter smaller by 10mm) and 235/40/18 is bigger in diameter by 13mm, which to be honest doesn't sound like much, but you will need to roll the rear guards quite a bit

d i c k i e s
16-04-2008, 08:28 AM
Roughly $225 each for that size wrapped in dunlop direzza's.

bradc
16-04-2008, 08:51 AM
Direzza Sport Z1 are good, DZ101 aren't so good.

I'd be going for Pilot Sport PS2, Eagle F1 Asymmetric, Bridgestone Adrenalin, or Yokohama AD07

16-04-2008, 11:41 AM
i think GT Radials are ok....even though they're marketed as a "budget tyre". If you really wanted good tyres i guess you'd go for michellines that are about $500 a corner

KiwiTT
16-04-2008, 09:39 PM
I think these are sold to me.

HELP !!!!

Now to tell the parents they will need to help me store my old mags/tyres for a little while until I get more settled.

Practical question. Can I carry 4 mags in my sedan ?

d i c k i e s
16-04-2008, 10:13 PM
If you try hard enough yes! wouldnt have that problem with a legnum... hahahaha!

bradc
16-04-2008, 10:13 PM
yep, you can store 5 wheels standing upright across the back seat, and 2 in the boot :)

If you want to store the wheels at my place you're welcome too

KiwiTT
16-04-2008, 10:23 PM
If you want to store the wheels at my place you're welcome tooThanks Brad. You are a lifesaver !!

I suppose, we may be doing tracking together, so that seems a good option too! As Ken says I can use the old wheels/tyres for the track and when the get worn out replaced them with slicks.

bradc
16-04-2008, 10:36 PM
now the biggest question, what tyres are you going for? I'm sensing a trip to the tirerack to read all of their latest tests and the consumer feedback?

I've also got about 5 or so tyre tests from various wheels and motor magazines if you're interested in borrowing the magazines from me

Gly
17-04-2008, 01:27 AM
sold to richard inc the gsd3s on them!

you can leave your old ones at my place when you get the 18s on...
and pick them up when your settled or have another place you would rather have them,

now i need some new 18" tyres.

KiwiTT
17-04-2008, 03:08 AM

Call me to arrange a suitable time.

bradc

At this rate Richard, you'll have the most heavily modified VR-4 in the club :)

KiwiTT
17-04-2008, 09:23 AM
Make hay while the sun shines.

On the cards is a lighter bonnet. With the vents, but I will need to repaint it to my silver colour.

bradc
17-04-2008, 09:36 AM
EVO style or the style I have? I personally think EVO style looks better with prefacelift bonnets. Speak to Alfred at Speedfactory and tell him I sent you and ask for a good price :)

KiwiTT
17-04-2008, 09:37 AM
Thanks Brad ... I may do that later.

KiwiTT
19-04-2008, 12:46 AM
I left the old wheels at Carstens's I understand Brad will be going over soon to pick them up. ... Thanks Brad too !

I think they really modernize the car.

What do you guys think ?

bradc

I'll be around at Carstens place sometime tonight to give him back the evo 8 wheels and pick up your wheels Richard :)

AllBeItMine

I notice a bit of vibration at high speed. thoughts ?

bradc
20-04-2008, 03:07 AM
It could be that one of the wheels or tyres isn't perfectly round, it could also be alignment or balancing

Gly
20-04-2008, 06:07 AM
might pay to have the balance checked,
i noticed a little aswell, but not enough to annoy me.

KiwiTT
20-04-2008, 07:25 AM

got your PM... naughty boy! LOL!!

KiwiTT
20-04-2008, 10:53 PM
I have taken it in. He mentioned something that it could be a "plastic" insert to make the wheels fit properly.

He'll balance and align and check everything else out.

You mean the locating ring?? That is pretty important :)

KiwiTT
20-04-2008, 11:28 PM
Don't know ?

He implied many alloys need the inserts to fit the various manufacturers.

NOTE: He did not say that is the problem, but it could be. He needs to check it out first, hence the alignment and balancing.

CANDEE

Thats correct :) They convert the wheel's bore to that of the car :) Only prob with them is that if you take the wheels on and off frequently you are prone to breaking them... :(

But could also be an alignment or balancing issue too :)

I was gonna say whats the ride like?...from 16's to 18's? but you have already mentioned that.

KiwiTT

He Just called. "No wheel inserts and the 3 of the 4 wheels are buckled !?!?"

He'll do what he can to balance them up and align it.

Hmm, thats not cool at all :(

Did he give any indication as to how badly buckled they were?

KiwiTT
20-04-2008, 11:54 PM
He said even with balancing I may still notice it.

Kenneth
20-04-2008, 11:55 PM
Another thought is that you could take them to a mag repair specialist and see if they can do anything with them.

KiwiTT
20-04-2008, 11:56 PM
Hmmm .. do you know of any ?

KiwiTT

Just spoke to him again. Could be looking at $500-$600 for a decent repair and he knows some one on the shore.

Gly
21-04-2008, 01:20 AM
just spoke to richard on the phone...

not good, any way richard will get a quote on having the wheels fixed up,
and we will sort out something from there, (part refund/help with repair cost)

i had no idea these were bent, i new they had a vibration at higher (than road legal) speed,
Uc's dirfting attempts probabilly did it.

theres arrow wheels...

I'll take my car down to our workshop day the following weekend. Swap the wheels back again and then take them over to Arrow Wheels in a couple of weeks time.

Ouch!!! :(

bradc
21-04-2008, 01:32 AM
One of the RPF1's I have was buckled slightly as well by about 1mm. Couldn't feel it even at 180kmh though. I would ask the guy how much they are buckled by and see if it is only one of them that is really badly buckled and the others might only be out by a small amount.

KiwiTT
21-04-2008, 01:36 AM
It'll be about 10-12 days of driving on them until then, so it should be long enough to feel how bad they are.

bradc
21-04-2008, 01:56 AM
Want to come back and pick up your old wheels so you still have something to drive on while they fix them? ;)

KiwiTT
21-04-2008, 02:04 AM
I'll make a judgement call soon.

KiwiTT
21-04-2008, 09:56 PM
It has improved marginally.I'll see how it goes for the next few days.

When I drive on flat tarmac I can feel it just at *naughty* speed. However, when I drive on the usual chipseal it is miles worse.

Of note, I seem to get more feedback from the road, which is not a bad thing either.

bradc
22-04-2008, 05:50 AM
perhaps the extra feedback is due to the lower profile?

Ryan
22-04-2008, 06:17 AM
perhaps the extra feedback is due to the lower profile?

I would think so. Might not be as grippy in the wet now though.

Gly
22-04-2008, 06:34 AM
they cant be a hell of alot of round if its only noticible at above legal road going limit

Subaru ETA
22-04-2008, 07:16 AM
if they are out of round at all you should beable to feel it between 80 - 120kmh. any faster and it usuallly goes away

KiwiTT
22-04-2008, 09:02 AM
Thats why I will wait and see how it goes.

KiwiTT
05-05-2008, 03:41 AM
I saw them on the "balancing machine" today. You could see the wobble.

I am getting all four of them fixed and then two of them are going to get the kerb damage repaired and repainted. They will look like new again.

He did say they were high quality alloys. Thanks Carsten.

Gly
05-05-2008, 06:38 AM
would have been better if they where high quality and round,
let me know how it goes, did he give any estimates or e.t.a?

KiwiTT
08-05-2008, 03:10 AM
All going well I will pick them up on tomorrow afternoon before 4pm.

My old wheels and 6mth old tyres will go to my brother ( He'll need new tyres this year ).

KiwiTT
09-05-2008, 11:23 AM
Picked them up today. They look really good now. Just need to test them at speed. :D

He also said, that he recommends about 38 psi as well ... does that sound right ?

bradc
09-05-2008, 11:25 AM
I've been running 38 front and 36 rear for some time now.

d i c k i e s
10-05-2008, 02:00 AM
whoa 38? most ive gone is 34PSi

bradc
10-05-2008, 03:50 AM
On the ST-R I run 40 front and 38 rear. It feels tons better than 32 or something all round.

My Wedsports wheels are slightly out of round, 3 are so small that you can't see it when it is spinning on a machine, but the machine says it needs weights at 2 points which is a sign they aren't 100%.

The last one is visible on the machine, but you don't feel it when driving at all. I thought I had bent one of them quite badly - the car was vibrating badly at 110kmh, but I took it to the tyre king today in Ellerslie and he fitted hub centric plastic rings on it and now it is perfect :D

KiwiTT
11-05-2008, 09:44 PM
Well, it felt good at * naughty * speeds now.

bradc
12-05-2008, 06:21 AM
mine feel good at the same speeds now too :)

KiwiTT
14-05-2008, 11:05 PM
Must admit after have the worn edges of the tyres moved inside to the outside, the vibration removed by the buckling being fixed, they feel a lot more "sure-footed".
