GC Smith and ND McKenzie shared an opening partnership of 415 runs eclipsing the previous record set by MH Mankad and P Roy of India against New Zealand in 1956.
It is also only the second time in test history that both batsmen have scored double centuries - Smith scoring 232 and McKenzie 226. This is Smith's fourth double century.
Mark Boucher also reclaimed the world record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper from Adam Gilchrist. Boucher now holds the record in both limited overs and test cricket.
South Africa declared their innings on 583/7 and Bangladesh are currently on 60/3 trailing by 523 runs at stumps on day 2.
