Hey Guys,

Been awhile. About a month ago my rear diff gave up the ghost. My mechanic tried to source one out here in Jamaica but to no luck. He contacted his sources in Japan and has notified me that they sell the unit complete and the cost would be $2,800 U$ before shipping and clearance duties. I could buy a car (admittedly an old car) for that kind of money.

I was wondering if this part cost less on your shores. Need to try cut down costs.
It would be great if the part was the same as one of the EVOs because those are much easier to find out here.

The part no# I was given is #MR430996 (AYC)

Thanks Folks.

I actually have one at the moment that I'm trying to sell! PM me if you're interested in it. It has done about 110km I think and when it was in a VR-4 it was working 100% fine

EVO 7/8/9 Diffs will fit..

I have fitted EVO 8 diff with S-AYC and so has Louis and Pezza :D...

So should be easy to source..

Wow  really?

if that the case that should be much easier to find out here. We are the Evo Capital of the caribbean. Was it a difficult swap? Did anything special have to be done?

Please, please more info :iloveyou:

There are a couple of threads detailing the S-AYC fitting in the Members area somewhere.. So i don't think you will be able to view unless your gain full membership status.. Well worth the investment of FULL MEMBERSHIP though

I've been trying to sign up all night but that paypal thing is giving me hell. Left an inquiry in the sign up section so hopefully i will hear back tomorrow when you guys wake up.

Made a few calls today. Someone says they have an Evo 8 diff out here but they say it's from the RS model. So I take it no AYC and that's no good. Also here i would also have to take the axle.

Someone asked me if the diff from a Mitsu RVR would work. Not sure what to tell them. Anybody?
Will keep you posted.

the LSD out of an EVO RS should be ok.

I have NO idea if an RVR diff would work or not.

A lot of people prefer the RS diff because there is no AYC, the RS diffs are quite expensive here. If you can get one for a good price they are great and you don't need to change the SYC fluids every 4500 miles.

But wont the axles have to be changed if I do the RS swap?

I'd check on the Evo forums. The Evo AYC diff fits onthe VR4, so whatever the Evo guys do to swap to the RS diff will be the same as the VR4 I would assume.

If I was Mitsubishi's designer, I would do my best to ensure one type of prop shaft/half shaft fitted both types of diff.

Update:

Well it turns out the Evo diffs are just as expensive as the VR4 and not as easy to find with S-AYC. The ones in the states have no AYC. But the cost factor really makes it a really painful choice.

I have found a second hand Rs diff in Jamaica however. Quite by luck. However it obviously has no ayc and axles would need to be changed (I also found the axles) for far less money (roughly 1/3) of the new option.

Now my friends and I finally drained the diff this weekend. Was going to drain the transfer case as well just to see if the problem might have been there. But there was no need as you will see. Once fiff plate was removed the sound of metal bits hitting the collection pan greeted us.

[Clear and considerable damage to the crown. At this point i'm going to cut and paste one of my friends explanation of the findings that we posted on a local site yesturday.

Pizza pretty much said all there was to say, so i'll let the pics do the talking [reallysad]

When i arrived Pizza and PennyGti had just jacked up the car on 4 stands:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/overboostR/Tech%20Projects/VR4%20Pizza/100_9450.jpg

WE did some tests, with the 4 wheels spinning off the ground the drivetrain spun freely and made little to no sounds whatsoever.

We Then loaded up the Rear diff by applying the Hand Brake, Released the load and started another roll there was a definitive knock in the rear diff at which point we
shut the car down and removed the botls holding the inspection plate on the rear diff.

While the oil drained out the clear sound of metal picecs hitting the pan could be clearly heard a mile away while everyone held there breath:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/overboostR/Tech%20Projects/VR4%20Pizza/100_9454.jpg

Upon removal of the plate we found this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/overboostR/Tech%20Projects/VR4%20Pizza/100_9453.jpg

Most of the larger pieces in the oil pan:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/overboostR/Tech%20Projects/VR4%20Pizza/100_9464.jpg

Inspection of the Crown Gear of the back diff follows 1 to 7, the pictures are taken as the diff is rotated to view all the damage to the crown:
1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

So damage can clearly be seen to a majority of the crown gear, which would idicate the pinion would be in the same condition.

Comparing to others that i have seen where a sudden burst would indicate large sections of metal ripped in a row of 5-6 Teeth:
The nature of this damage would indicate that a small piece of gear was chipped off in a past "moment of exuberance" and has been sloshing around in the diff for awhile, slowly chipping off small pieces until the gears would "jump" or "slip" which is what alerted Pizza that something was wrong.

The next order of business is to remove the diff assembly and open it up and inspect it, at this point we can determine:

1. The crown and pinion ratio
2. The condition of the inside of the housing
3. The condition of the Planetary Gear set inside the differential.

Last photo shows the size of metal chunks we removed:

The diff case appears to be in good shape. Thankfully it happened at cruise speed, as I said, so major breakage was avoided. We will be taking off the diff and fully inspecting it tomorrow. Now we will have to check whether the ratios are similar with the old diff and the diff I found. If they are then some swapping and mixing can be done. IF they are similar then the diff could be back up without loss of the AYC and without the need to change axles. [angel]

let's hope

Okay pulled off the diff today and this was what we saw. :o Pinion in far worse condition than the crown... scratch that the pinion is F@!#@ked up [rofl]

Anyway tomorrow we should be able to compare the teeth and calculate the ratio of the one I found. Wish me luck [crazy]

I just convert my GDI galant to a VR4 but I need some info as to how the rear differential works, can I not use the AYC? I try getting some diagram for the connections but no luck.
Can anyone help?

ontrax - it will be a lot of work, you'll need all the g-sensors, pump, ayc ecu, etc. Just get an LSD and be done with it.

hey pizza, did a similar thing to yours last week,

only my pinion gear went and only 3 teeth! nothing else damaged luckily,

is all you need the pinion and crown wheel?

ive had a couple of other people offer me parts...

you should be able to get them fairly cheap from here in NZ or one of the UK guys?

Well at this point after opening the diff the crown and pinion seem to be the only damage. The casing is fine. The ayc side looks fine but need to open it up properly to check the clutches.

Okay went and compared the damaged diff with the one I found and was glad to find that the teeth and ratio matched perfectly. 53/16 etc. Genuine Vr4 diff but no AYC. Off of a crashed Vr4 from japan but never used here in JA.

As stated before I would have to buy the matching axles but I would get everything for roughly £478 or $950 US. Is this a good price?

I know the non AYC Evo diffs are stronger but are the non AYC VR4 diffs stronger as well?

Really? Is this new or used?

Could you make a call and find out how much one would be without shipping please?

The part no# is #MR430996 (AYC)

Okay

UPDATE:

Well I bought the diff and axles this morning and Robert wasted no time installing it. [wave]

It installs perfectly and there was no need to swap or change front plates as was a possible concern. [crazy]

The diff was opened and inspected before installing and all was found to be well and in tip top shape. Thank you God [angel]

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/Pizzadelite/Galant%20Diff/9a59892a.jpg

The axles were also in great condition and you can see by this pic the size difference between the ones used with AYC (bigger diff, smaller axles) and the new ones

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/Pizzadelite/Galant%20Diff/fc98788d.jpg

HOWEVER, we have encountered a problem :-\

One of the old Axle rings (that fits into the left hub) has a crack in it. This ring is associated with the ABS and the problem is that it can spin freely. The new axles never came with the matching ring. Robert took it to Bolt and others to try and find a match but nobody has one. They say they can order one from the states but that will take time. :'(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/Pizzadelite/Galant%20Diff/6a9956c4.jpg

Robert after discussions with other specialists believes the solution is to weld them straight on to the axles and grind off the excess weld. He took the rings and axles to a machine shop not too long ago and hopes he may get them back tonight or tomorrow morning. :)

It is not an expensive or complicated fix but i'm just disappointed because i was hoping to 'Test Drive' her tonight [whistle]

Here are some more associated pics of the work area and some tools. I am blessed to have a nice flat, covered area to do the work. You can also see that I fitted back the spotlight. Couldn't get all of the fading from the plastic lens but it now matches again. (took these while it was raining)

The jack I bought is heavy but excellent. The sliding bed I already had and I also had 2 of the jack stands. Had to raise the car in stages because when the back is fully up the jack can't slide under the front.
