Hi guys, any ideas on what the standard tyre size for these babies are? I've got 215/45/17's but she seems a little long in the legs, esp on hills. Would be fine if she were the bigger engined type. Wondering if I should go to 205/40/17's? Or would this be too hard a ride? The 215/45/17's seem an ok ride.

Have removed the catalytic converter, any other small mods that can be done? Maybe an ECU? Airbox? Without spending more than NZ$500 or so.

Find out what the original was ? I suspect 195/60 R15.

Use this page (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) to calculate

The 1.8 is probably a little under-powered for the weight. Maybe a new HKS air Induction may help.

Primo link dude! Thanks! I phoned Mitsubishi and Firestone, and no-one could tell me the exact sizes that they came in. So I will take a pen and paper around a few car yards and compare.

Thank you sir! Awesome links. I am guessing mine is an oddball as the ST's are 2WD but mine is 4WD. Thanks again.

No, your car is not an oddball, some are 4WD. Is your car also auto as i've heard they can be sluggish. When i bought my car dealers told me to avoid the auto as I would be disapointed with it. I am quite happy with the performance of my car but I need to rev it hard to get resonable overtaking as Max power is at 6500rpm!!!

Yep it's the auto. Here is what I have noticed. The car is gutless below 3000rpm, even with tiptronic. As soon as it hits 3500rpm it starts taking off nicely. If I keep it nailed above 4000rpm, it goes very well. But if I slacken off and it drops below 3000rpm, it's back to slow mode again. 2nd gear is the worst around town, drop her back to first.... It shows all the signs of being too high geared, so wondering if dropping down a tire size will help.

The other thing I have noticed is that it seems to run MUCH quicker at night-time. Maybe this is due to cold air. Wondering whether that air intake resistor mod would do the trick along with a better air intake/filter.

Otherwise, I really like the car, 1800 and all.

the other problem is the engine doesnt produce max torque until 5000rpm, it also makes my car feel a little breathless on the open road if the revs drop

you probly hav the correct tire size,
dont change ur tire size or rim size from Spec. because u are changing ur speed as well. eg if ur size was 205/45/17 and u go 205/40/17 then u will be doing like 45kmh while reading 50kmh,

u might hav been given the wrong tires or rims when u got them.

Speak to a very close friend of mine John Davies, from B.G. Marketing Ltd.
hes a Manager there and they import all TSW, BBS, CARGAR, Centerline, and a heep more for New Zealand. when u buy rims for ur car or truck ur tire guy asks these guys what u can have!
Oh and mention my name Nige.
I'll post their number soon.

Good Luck

... Maybe this is due to cold air. ....

Yes. Cold air is denser, hence more oxygen. The engine is more of an air-pump then a fuel pump; the more air your can get through it the more powerful it. However, you need to make sure the rest of engine and car is up to scratch or you can cause some damage if you go to far. [Many on this forum, have upgraded their cars]

Check, this page (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-injection.htm/printable) for some basic information.

I looked at a Mitsi car yard, some Legnums had 195x60x15. Which is closer to either 205x45x17 or a 215x40x17. My 215x45x17 are slightly over this spec. So either of those previous two will be going on - but only when tires need changing. I was considering a 205x40x17, and am not concerned about the speedo - but would this be to hard a ride?

Thanks for yet another primo url KiwiTT! :-)

Are they REALLY bad, and how much?

Well, the engine isn't going to die tomorrow or anyting. They are noisy on cold start, and are covered by mechanical warranty. First they flush engine and add some additive. If not quiet after 1000km, then they replace them all as it is easier t replace them all rather than figure out which are bad. Well this is what I am told. Engine had additive some kms back (more than 1000) and still noisy, so....

Well as most know i sold my VR-4 Legnum 'TUNES' the other week and have always had a Legnum ST sitting in the garage collecting dust. Thought i might have some fun with it and make a few little changes, not touching the engine really which i see as being pointless after driving the beast. I can confirm that 215's are the way to go with wagons after talking to a number of friends, one who works at Zoom wheels on the shore here.
