View Full Version : Fabricating wheelarches...

Today I set to the rear wheel arches on the coupe - They looked a little frilly and closer inspection with a grinder revealed that they were a curious lamination of underseal, rust and bodyfiller....:inquisiti

Anyway - I've cut the rot out and I'm back to sound metal. I don't have any pictures unfortunately. Problem is I now need to make repairs to the inner & outer wheel arch skins and the trailing edge of the sill. Nothing too drastic but I can't get replacement panels - I've got to fabricate repair sections. The sill isn't a problem, that's a simple curve with a flanged end. It's the arches that are the headache.

A bit of searching and I've found these - which should help massively:

Anyway, my question is - Has anyone done this kind of thing before? I have welded in new wheel arches but I've always had the luxury of repair panels in the past - I've never had to fabricate and the contour looks like it'll be an absolute sod to get right.

Any useful tips?

could you not possibly go to your local panel supplier with some measurements and see if there is anything similar? Iknow mk1 MR2 boys use austin maestro arches, so maybe there could be something that fits the bill with a little modification, better than using those universal wheelarches as they never look right....

That's not a bad idea! I could take a cardboard template and see what's a good match! I hadn't thought of doing that!!:afro: Yeah, I too am not keen on the universal items, I imagine it's still near impossible to get the curve right!

Yeah, something like that Brad - Possibly Mk1/Mk2 Escort arches, or something of that period might fit....
